A Brief History of Albany Medical SchoolFounded in 1839, by James H. Armsby and Alden March (president and co-founder of American Medical Association), Albany Medical College is one of the oldest medical schools in the United States. The college is part of the Albany Medical Center, which then includes the Albany Medical Centre Hospital. It is one of the many constituents of Union University. Over the glorious past of 170 years, the college has a distinguished record of providing the best possible level of education. The College functioned as a separate entity until 1982, the board of directors of both facilities had tried for incorporation back in 1970 and again in 1980, but 1982 was the year when the incorporation happened. Albany, the city has a rich history itself. It has always been a centerpiece of the economic and cultural core of New York State. Today, The Albany Med is Albany’s biggest employer with approximately 7,000 employees. Undergraduate Studies,The Albany Medical College curriculum is meant with the knowledge that, upon admission, students have already received sound preliminary training in chemistry, physics, and biology. The four-year graduate school curriculum integrates basic science and clinical medicine to accomplish this mission. the fundamental sciences are organized into conceptual or organ system modules that begin in Year I. Standardized patients help teach and test clinical skills. Students participate in “LaGrange Medical Informatics” which introduces methods of trying to find information and data management and helps them to develop the critical analytical skills necessary to gauge the ever-growing medical literature. All four-year-long modules correlate with clinical and basic science issues that the scholars learn concurrently. In November 2010, the Undergraduate Education Council approved a resolution to want all students to finish 40 hours of service-learning activities over the four years of grad school.
