Bond

AFMC has a liability bond to make sure students do not leave the service of the armed forces. The army spends an approximate amount of Rs.28 Lakhs on each student in the four years of education. The army’s budget would be wasted if one does not join the armed forces. Medical students have to sign a bond adding up to Rs. 28 lakhs the amount by the army. It is a 7 years benefit obligation bond, which incorporates 1 year of temporary job and up to 3 years of field posting. If the student keeps the bond, it is obligatory to go work for the tri-services for at least seven years. If the student decides to digress and leave the armed forces before or midway through the armed forces’ service, he or she has to pay the Rs. 28 Lakhs.

Life At AFMC

AFMC is not a regular medical college like all others over the country. It is associated with the armed forces and that has its perks and discipline. Students looking for careers in this prestigious college should consider this fact before applying.

Faculty

The college boasts of the finest teachers for MBBS in the country. The professors are mostly serving tri-services officers and eminent government scientists. Students have to pay salutations and respect, as most of the professors are serving army officers. Most of the teachers are also alumni of the college and have been teaching for more than 15 to 20 years. Students have described the faculty as “experienced and knowledgeable”; the faculty at the college hardly gets any complaints, except for excessive discipline and strictness, both of which would seem only natural to a college administered by the armed forces, as said before. The disciplined and experienced staff emanates a sense of control and authority on the campus. This authority is not to intimidate the students but rather to allow them to see a picture of how tough life can be in the armed forces. The incredibly seasoned physicians share more than their knowledge of medicine with the new students arriving at the college.

Attendance

As AFMC is a college administered by military officials, students expect the college to be very strict when it comes to attendance, but the college is not as strict as other MUHS colleges. However, being an army-associated college, attendance is taken very seriously. Students are naturally seen to comply with the strict rules of the army. Attendance during practicals is given more importance than theory lectures, as the armed forces believe in the hands-on experience being the most positive and effective.

Hostel Facility

Separate hostel accommodation facilities are provided to boys & girls. Staying in a hostel is mandatory for the students during the course and is seen as an important experience for them. Free mess service is provided to all medical cadets. The college provides a separate hostel to the officers during post-graduation.

Girl’s Hostel:

The girl’s hostel was built up in 1984 & presently admits 130 cadets in the hostel. The hostel has 70 single occupancy rooms. It also has 30 double-occupancy rooms. The hostel consists of four dining halls.

Hospital

Being a college of medical sciences of the army, the college hosts one of the most incredible hospitals in the entire country. Initially, there were three hospitals that were amalgamated in one hospital and named ‘Military Hospital’, and then it was re-designated as Command Hospital (Southern Command) in 1967. It is spread over a vast 105 acres of land and is the largest hospital of the Indian Army. The facilities at this hospital are unmatched in comparison. Department of Neurosurgery, Department of Urology, Department of Plastic Surgery are some of the prominent departments that make it the best hospital for the Armed Forces. Being in AFMC gives one the privilege of studying and practicing in one of the best hospitals in the country. The students get the needed knowledge and hands-on for later in life. Students also get to see veterans and serving officers and realize what to expect in the future.

The library has a computer lab, study rooms, and stocks of every kind of useful books. Students also look out for other sources of knowledge and teaching to enhance their experience or to catch up. These helping facilities can be found online around the world and can be accessed easily.

Extra-Curriculars at Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC)

The college differs from normal medical colleges in several ways. And not only due to its rich military history and culture but also due to the facilities it provides to its students. The students graduating from AFMC, are not only doctors but also seasoned and trained to handle tough army conditions. They are expected to learn more than medicine and are given a sense of treating life as a serious and important concept. AFMC graduates are equipped with both physical and psychological skills to take on life and challenge it to its maximum.

This is seen as a sign of honor and respect amongst the society and considered glorifying to know that one is serving the country. The uniform also commands respect and empathy in the general public of the country and people salute and respect the officers. Life at the college in Pune is very interesting. The discipline, the sports, the hostel life, the family feeling is all part of it. The army does not only enroll students, it accepts, it allows one to enter a family, a history. I'm grappling with my online studies in Infectious Disease at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. It's made me realize what a visual learner I still am. So these vids are making what was murky crystal clear. While I am easily distracted when I have to do hours of straight reading, I am glued to the videos. I've looked for a series of such videos for months. A million thanks - Dr Najeeb has a true passion for teaching and can convey highly complex topics in an understandable and fun way.
