Established in 1892, CMU has more than 16,000 students on its Mount Pleasant campus and more than 8,000 studying online at more than 30 North American locations. More than 20 percent of CMU’s main campus students complement online courses with their on-campus classes. CMU offers about 300 academic programs at the undergraduate, master, professional and doctoral levels, joining only five percent of U.S. institutions in the top two Carnegie research classifications. Furthermore, CMU set up the nation’s 137th College of Medicine to tackle a growing shortage of primary care doctors in Michigan. In May 2017 the inaugural college class graduated. CMU is a university where students, teachers, workers, and alumni strive to achieve excellence, live compassionately, and lead.

    History

    On September 13, 1892, Central opened its doors as the Central Michigan Normal School and Business Institute, with teaching, business, and stenography classes. At that time, few teachers in the state received any formal teaching training, so school founders made teacher training their mission in founding the second normal school in the state. Thirty-one students attended second-floor classes over an office in downtown Mount Pleasant, at the corner of Main and Michigan streets. Most of the students were eighth graduates at the time, attending the “Normal” for a few weeks or months before beginning their teaching careers. The land was purchased within the first two years, and a $10,000 Normal School Building was built. The school has undergone significant growth and change since then, yet it remains committed to preparing students for personal and professional success, as well as civic engagement, during their post-graduate lives. By 1893, it became known as the Normal School of Central Michigan. Central’s educational services were also rising more robust throughout this period. In 1903, students who completed two years of schooling beyond high school started receiving their life-teaching certificates. The first psychology clinic of the school was founded in 1910, and Central was first accredited in 1915 by the North Central Association. The College of Medicine, the 137th medical school in the country, was founded in 2009 with a mission to enhance access to high-quality health care in Michigan, especially in rural and medically underserved communities. It was created to address the shortage of Michigan physicians and the need for quality health care. The first class of 62 individuals from the College of Medicine graduated in 2017, each of whom received residency. In January 2017, the four-story, 169,000-square-foot CMU Biosciences Building opened to students, providing greater opportunities for practical hands-on study to students and faculty, and opening the doors for leading researchers and scholars to come to CMU. And while so much has changed over the past two centuries, the University of Central Michigan strives to uphold the values engraved on its seal in 1892: Sapientia, Virtus, Amicitia-wisdom, honesty, friendship

    Selection Criteria

    The CMU School of Medicine admissions committee uses a comprehensive examination of candidates to recognize students with varied intellectual and life experiences, where each applicant’s non-academic qualifications are evaluated as carefully as their academic record. The Committee is carefully reviewing the complete profile of each candidate to select candidates who are academically qualified and have the range of volunteer/community and personal experiences that will help them become well-prepared physicians to care for the diverse population of our communities. The Committee also considers that each applicant’s “distance traveled” to arrive at this stage of his or her career, recognizing that not all applicants have equal access to resources, mentorship and strong preparation for high school before college.

    Letter of Recommendation

    CMU School of Medicine is engaged in the letter service of AMCAS, and all letters should go through them. CMU needs a letter from the Committee or a letter packet if it is given by your college or university. In AMCAS, these combined letters count as one letter and meet the entire criteria. If your school has no counselor or committee, you must send three letters as follows: two letters from the science professors with whom you took classes, and one letter from the non-science professor with whom you took classes.

Central Michigan University College of Medicine Research

The College devotes significant resources and energies to continuing recent success and expanding research programs–with particular emphasis on issues that are important to our region’s citizens. Efforts include fundamental, translational, clinical and public health research areas to address problems important to advance scientific discovery and improve health and well-being in the community. The faculty investigates important aspects of medical research with the potential to contribute to new medical discoveries while training medical students and resident physicians in appropriate research methodologies. Students and residents of the CMU develop a strong sense of discovery, leading to scholastic contributions and enhanced educational results. Federal funding supports research activities, including the National Institutes of Health; national organizations, including the American Heart Association, state sources, including the Michigan Health Endowment Fund, and foundational support, including the Arnold P. Gold Foundation.

    Central Michigan University has constructed on its Mt. Pleasant campus a 12,600 square-foot, state-of-the-art research facility for its faculty of medicine in the field of basic and translational research. The building opened in June 2013 and houses eight faculties of the College of Medicine. The laboratories are designed to perform biomedical research in an open concept environment community, while at the same time pursuing projects that will lead to innovative medical discoveries. CMU houses a shared cell culture facility and small rodent vivarium, as well as common equipment for shared molecular and cell biology. Two of our faculty are partners in the psychology program and are located in the Brain Research and Integrative Psychology (BRAIN) Department of Health Professions. The BRAIN Center is fitted with facilities for cell and live animal imaging, and shared tools for conduct research. A vivarium backs it up. Three of the faculty members are partners in the psychology program and are based within the Health Professions Department of Brain Research and Integrative Psychology (BRAIN). The BRAIN Center is equipped with cell and live animal imaging equipment, and collaborative research tools. A vivarium emphasizes this.

How to be Successful in Medical College

    Read with your Brain Powered On

    If you’ve ever found yourself running your eyes over the text’s words but find your mind off somewhere else, you’ll know how much time it takes to re-read long passages of the text. Reading more actively (that is, considering) will make reading more efficient and effective. Read to understand and relate the ideas of the text to your existing knowledge, preceding readings, lecture material, and course objectives. As you read along, summarize the main ideas, interpret the reading themes, think critically and attempt to state the material in your own words. Memorizing anything written in the document doesn’t need to be. Instead, concentrate on selectively reading, extracting information relevant to your course, as well as your intent as a student.

    Work in the Correct Direction:

    First of all, you have to identify what your correct direction is. For choosing the correct direction you should always emulate the people who are successful in the field you are pursuing. By taking advice from the successful people and following their footsteps you will be able to start from the basics of how accomplished people started their journey and then you can introduce new ideas and innovations. The more you will interact with successful people more likely it will get for you to find the correct direction.

    Study in a quiet environment, with limited distractions

    Every time you study in a noisy environment, you often find yourself listening to conversations with other people, or letting your mind wander away. That does little to help you concentrate on your studies. Once you have begun studying in a distraction-free zone, you will be able to concentrate so much more that, in turn, makes studying much less stressful and difficult. When you can concentrate on something you can generally understand the details faster and more effectively. This saves time and a task is achieved in a short period. This may sound surprising but being able to complete your research with higher concentration levels and save you money in less time. If you can concentrate more deeply on your studies, you’ll have less likely to need to find a mentor or repeat a course.
