Zucker School of Medicine Background:

Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at hofstra/northwell were established in 2008. This School of Medicine was co-founded by Northwell Health and Hofstra University. This School of Medicine encompasses solid medical education programs of clinical and graduate program of Northwell, as well as strong academic and research programs. For these programs, Northwell and Hofstra had partnered with Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. Zucker School of Medicine Brief History:

2006: The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) had reported a significant increase in population and thus, as a result, suggested that the enrollment for Medical School be increased by 30%. 2008: Hofstra University and North Shore-LIJ Health System arrived onto a formal agreement whereby the first allopathic School and Medicine came into being in Nassau County. Furthermore, this was the first Medical school in the New York metropolitan area covering more than 35 years. After an official examination, Dr. Lawrence Smith was appointed as the Founding Dean. This was due to his exceptional leadership skills. Dr. Smith has since September 1, 2006, has assumed his position as the Dean. Furthermore, his contributions have been vast in terms of his efforts in upholding an effective partnership with a smooth integration of experiences in terms of classroom experiences and clinical experiences. Moreover, 2008 marks the beginning of many integral events that made a huge impact. These events encompass the initial SOM team that moved into the Hofstra University’s library first office. Also, the self-study process kick-off event for LCME was conducted along with REP for former Jets facility. 2009: The program of pipeline also set in motion in June. In December, an accreditation site visit was conducted for LCME. 2010: In June, the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) permitted Initial Accreditation to Medicine School. Also, in June, the School of Medicine formally opened its initial building. Furthermore, in September, the cycle for admissions had begun. 2011: 2011 marks the inaugural class for the Medicine school. 2012: In April, an introductory publication of the literary journal of the Medicine School’s publication was held. In the month of august, SOM had welcomed their second class; stressing the significance of this crucial time. Furthermore, in November, the School of Medicine hosted its preliminary scholarship day. 2013: In June, SOM had initiated their new construction. In the same month, they had received provision authorization from the LCME. 2014: In January, the university to give scholarships to their finest students received $10 million worth of grant. In May, Osler Society had initiated. The same year, in July, a $50,000 award was granted to the Medical Scholars in the pipeline program. 2015: The Medicine School initiated its expansion building, for a significant increment in the total size that is 60,000 square feet. In March, the first matchday was conducted. In May, $50,000 worth of award was granted for the pipeline program for the scholars of medical. In the same year, SOM had received full accreditation. 2016: On January 1, 2016, the name of the School had some changes implemented to it. This name altered from being ‘Hofstra North Shore-LIJ’ to ‘Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine.’ In February, the students ran a free clinic operating in Queens. In July, celebrations were taking place due to new beginnings prevalent. 2017: This year marked an immensely crucial time where the students stood unified against Obamacare repeal where the Northwell School of Medicine students stood in solidarity with ‘Our patient’s movement’ to protect millions of people nationwide from the cancellation of Affordable Care Act (ACT) leading to severe circumstances.  In January 2017, Hofstra Northwell School of medicine, two years post-graduation of its first class, had been ranked among the finest medical schools nationwide, according to the 2018 U.S News and World report’s Best Graduate Schools. This was a very critical time for the Medicine School.  In August, Donald and Barbara Zucker made a generous donation worth $61milion. This substantial donation was to advance and progress the health profession. Thus, as a result, the Medicine School was renamed as ‘The Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine.’ 2019: 8 students on June 24, 2019, began their pursuit of medical knowledge and science and went above and beyond in their quest of theirs. Right after 10 years of initiation of the Medical Scholars Pipeline Program (MSPP) for the pupils of high school, this new ZPP aims to send off college students to prestigious medical institutes to aid students in achieving their dreams of pursuing the medical field.

Hofstra school of Medicine Application Process:

Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine participate in the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS). AMCAS authenticates and allocates applications to the medical schools to which students apply.  To reach out to AMCAS staff, email at, or by calling (202) 282-0600. The entire set of transcripts must be submitted to AMCAS.  The official or unofficial transcripts should not be sent directly to the Zucker School of Medicine. After formally applying through AMCAS, a notification will be given via email from the Zucker School of Medicine’s note of a confirmed application. Ensure your email security settings allow emails on The deadline to apply through AMCAS is August 1. The secondary materials deadline for submission is August 31st.  The interviews are undertaken in September and decisions regarding the admissions will be by October 1.

Hofstra school of Medicine Application Requirements:

All candidates must have completed their bachelor’s degree from a recognized U.S. or Canadian college before matriculation. The candidate must be a United States citizen or a permanent resident. The application requirements comprise of:
  • Complete primary application that is submitted through the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS).
  • A Premedical Committee Letter: In case there is no availability of the Premedical Committee, the requirement to submit 3 distinct letters of recommendation. In these three letters of recommendation, 2 letters should come from individual professors in which at least one should be in science, and one letter should come from a profession about non-academics. The candidates should then submit these letters of recommendation through the American Medical College Application Service.
  • Complete secondary application: This involves a $100 application fee.
  • Complete the CASPer exam: CASPer is a 90-minute online test involves judgment. This test aims to evaluate and critically analyze our non-cognitive capabilities, and also recognizing individual characteristics comprising empathy, ethics, how sensitive a person is regarding culture, and versatility. In case, some students who have already taken this exam, this exam shall be re-taken by those students.

Hofstra school of Medicine Selection Criteria:

This involves academic authorizations; individual traits; career aims; and the individual’s ability to influence the society constructively, the profession. The Criteria especially important are:
  • The academic performance of the undergraduate and graduate encompassing individual’s GPA, thoroughness of undergraduate study, the university individual attended, and academic major
  • The MCAT score obtained.
  • Extracurricular activities. These activities comprise of community service, roles in leadership, awards, individual’s employment, the experience of research, and distinctive accomplishments.

Interview Day:

A very significant day that marks the future of students pursuing the field of medicine. This day comprises of:
  • Multiple Mini Interview (MMI)
  • There will be presentations undertaken by the Office of Admissions and Student Finance. They will talk about some of the most appropriate topics to provide the students with an in-depth description of the curriculum, how the admissions process works, and what is the role played by each office.

Curriculum Highlights:

EMT Training:

The First Eight Weeks: This is the first course of the curriculum and stands for Emergency Medical Technical Training. This is an innovative clinical engagement by the students to utilize their expertise and learn effectively.


Patient-centered explorations in Active reasoning, learning, and synthesis. This is considered a fundamental course; the building block of the entire curriculum. It is a mixture of case/problem program for learning.

Initial and Advanced Clinical Experiences:

During the first year, it is a clerkship program in which students are matched with 3-discipline specific, experts within faculty.

Structure Lab:

There are several initiatives involving local communities that the staff and students take part in. These initiatives include community fairs, voluntary activities, counseling of young students willing to pursue science and medicine, annual programs, fundraising activities for treatments and others. There are some national organizations and local organizations that students are involved in. This encompasses the school’s free clinic. 1. Medical Scholars Pipeline Program:

This is deemed the signature program. This program is specifically designed to enhance the diversity within the workforce of Healthcare. This aims to provide exposure to the underrepresented students in medicine to a variety of professions relating to healthcare.

2. Zucker Pipeline Program:

The deadline for this program is April 1, 2020. The students who submit their application by March 1, 2020, will be given preference over the others with zero application fee. The students who are admitted will obtain a yearly stipend worth $1,750. ZPP will begin from June 22, 2020, until July 31, 2020. There is a wide variety of programs that are pre-medical involving:
  • Level 1:

    Courses to enhance science concepts including a better understanding of Chemistry, Anatomy, Physics, and Physiology.
  • Level 2:

    This level involves the preparation of the MCAT test.
  • Level 3:

    This level involves the experience of research for the students.

Admission Requirements for Zucker Pipeline Program:

There are various requirements to be selected for the ZPP during your freshman year. Firstly, the applicant must have a GPA of 3.2 in their bachelor’s degree. Furthermore, the applicant must exhibit well-built concepts of biology and chemistry. Physics level class is favored but not an obligation. The applicant must have at least a composite score of 1200 for SAT and as for ACT, it should be at least 25. Furthermore, having said all this, there will be a strong preference for candidates who are:
  1. Students who fall within the category of top 10% of their class.
  2. Students keen to take part in the 3-year program.
  • Students keen to maintain a record of good attendance.
Their Office of Diversity and Inclusion along with the Office of Admissions take the decisions regarding the admissions into the Zucker Pipeline Program (ZPP). This is to ensure all admissions are bias-free.

Policies of Zucker Pipeline Program:

  • The candidate must be college freshmen.
  • The candidate must be a citizen of the United States.
  • The students must show willingness and on-going interest in their respective fields of medicine.
  • If the student is enrolled in the program or gets acceptance, he/she must obtain a Medical Clearance from Employee Health Services Office located in Northwell health.
  • To progress to the second year into ZPP, the student must maintain at least a GPA of 3.3. Furthermore, the ZPP Selection Committee must recommend to the student for them to advance.
  • Also, students must receive a recommendation from the ZPP Selection Committee to advance to the second year of the program. The recommendation will be formed based on how well the student performed academically, commitment to ZPP and how the attendance was.
  • To progress to the third year, students are strongly urged to keep a minimum of 3.5 GPA. Again, the students must receive a recommendation from the ZPP Selection Committee to advance to the third year of the program. The recommendation will be formed based on how well the student performed academically, commitment to ZPP and how the attendance was.
  • The Diversity and Inclusion Deans have the right to dismiss any student from the Zucker Pipeline Program, because of problems pertaining, but not limited to, disappointing or inadequate performance academically, absence of professionalism, and more than 2 absentees in summers.

Application Process for ZPP.

  • Firstly, the Zucker Pipeline Program online student form of information needs to be completed.
  • An essay of 250 words in which the reason for interest in ZPP is testified.
  • Attach two letters of recommendations given by the professors in College.
  • Attach a copy of a transcript of the first semester of the college of Candidate.
  • Attach a copy of candidate’s Composite Score of SAT and/or composite score of ACT.
  • One copy of Candidate’s advance Placement exam score verification regarding the ranking in class, if applicable and available.
