Emory University School of Medicine is one of the best medical schools in the region, with a full-time faculty of over 2500 and 800 volunteer faculty members. The school receives around 9000 applications, with 143 allotted positions, which shows how competitive the university is. Diversity is very high too, with 57% being women and 69% being nontraditional, i.e. were out of college for a year before entering the school. Education

The school conducts an extensive program of teaching and research, with continuous extension in programs to areas beyond the bounds of traditional medicine. Emory University stands out due to its affiliations and a large patient population. The environment is perfect to surround the School of Medicine complex. Emory University offers MD, MD Dual Degrees, Doctor of Physical Therapy, Physical Therapy Dual Degrees, MMSc in Anesthesiology, MMSc in Human Genetics & Genetic Counseling, Physician Assistant, and many more.

The MD program requires at least three years of undergraduate education. If your degree is from anywhere than the United States or Canada, then the 32 semester hours of the required science coursework have to be completed from a regionally accredited U.S. or Canadian institution.
Students must also be able to show a high level of academic ability, with the average GPA being 3.7 and MCAT scores of 128-129.

Application review process

Applications are reviewed from September to February. After this, selected applicants are contacted for an email. The application at AMCAS must be updated all the time with the correct information during this particular time. A personal interview is a necessity.

Division of Curriculum

The division of the MD curriculum is divided into four phases.

Phase 1 is the foundation of medicine and will last for around 18 months. Students begin with a 4-month “Healthy Human” module to study human physiology so they can start the clinical skills training with group activities to create a healthy environment. In the fifth month, students start to see real patients get hands-on experience. Side by side they start to study human disease in the foundation phase. This is done in systems-based blocks where students are provided with dissection tables to ease in the study. The grading criteria is done on a pass/fail basis for the first 18 months. Lastly, students are given two months to pass Step 1 of the United States Medical Licensing Exam.

Phase 2 is the application of medical sciences which will last for 12 months. Students will be provided core knowledge of the basic clinical medical and surgical fields and every student will complete the required hospital and patient rotations in various departments. The rotations will be done in one of the Emory-affiliated healthcare facilities listed throughout Atlanta.

Phase 3 is the discovery, lasting for 5 months. Students will conduct hypotheses-driven research under the direction of a faculty member. Students are advised to bring their core interests of the community, creative writing, and the public health into the project. The core focus during this phase will be on the project and project only.

Phase 4, the last phase if the translation of medical sciences, will last for 9 months, and will turn each student into a physician. Rotations will be done in the Emergency Medicine, ICU, and an internship is required in surgery or medicine.

Emory University focuses on the clinical training of its student. From the start of their program, students are engaged in group activities to promote basic communication skills. Students also carry out physical examinations, where they are recorded and feedback is given to them. Patient simulators are available to stimulate patient care and allow students to get real-life experience. Team-training exercises are promoted throughout to help in the future as team management skills are increasingly important. Serving such a large number of patients, helps the student learn more and more in real-life situations.

Other costs are the cost of attendance which includes supplies, books, food and rent, utilities, etc. The estimate for the cost of attendance for a year is $83,000 of the MD program and can vary from program to program.

Financial Aid

Students are encouraged to apply for financial aid as soon as they start their application process. Once the university receives your information on FAFSA, documentation requirement emails will be sent and consideration will start to take place. The awarding of the notification begins by April 2018. This includes federal aid that is low-interest rate loans, work-study, and grants. Other are scholarships or grants and loans.

The campus life of Emory University School of Medicine

The campus dining provides various food court options. The Barnes & Noble Emory University Bookstore carries clothing and gifts Emory affiliated. The campus also is home to The Michael C. Carlos Museum, which holds more than 16,000 artifacts. The Campus Life Center (CLC) will open in 2019 located just a few steps from the School of Medicine. To help diversity, the Center for Women at Emory provides a gathering place for women for a lively discussion. It also offers a variety of programs on important topics too.

With the new curriculum made, the students will have to engage in active learning, and resources provided by the school might not be enough. This is where Dr. Najeeb’s Lecture can assist you. Firstly the introduction, Dr. Najeeb has been teaching students around the globe for 26 years in fields of medicine like dentistry, nursing, and pharmacy students in 190 countries. His lectures on USMLE Step 1 have a 98% success rate. The videos are in the format of a classroom, done on a whiteboard to give students a formal feeling.
