About Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS)

The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS), is located in New York City. It was established by the Mount Sinai Hospital in 1963. Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS) and Mount Sinai Hospital make up Mount Sinai Medical Center, situated adjacent to Central Park on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is a pioneer on the national and international level in the medical and scientific training, biomedical research, and patient care. The medical school for the Mount Sinai Health System has been continuously expanding and today has seven hospital campuses and has more than 5,000 faculty members and almost 2,000 students, residents and fellows.


Ranking

For the year 2018, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS) was placed at 18th position among all the National Research-Based Medical Schools, according to the U.S. News & World Report. Moreover, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS) was no. 13th among all US medical schools for receiving NIH grants for the year 2017. The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) ranks Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai as 2nd in research dollars per principal investigator among all national medical schools. Admission Criteria at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS)

    Admission Requirements

    For an applicant who wishes to enroll in the MD Program, they must have done a bachelors from a recognized university or college in the USA or Canada. The competencies/required coursework include:

    One academic year credit in the following subjects:

        Biology

        General Chemistry (can be substituted with a minimum score of 4 on the AP Chemistry test when Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry is studied for one semester)

        Physics (can be replaced with a minimum score of 4 on the AP Physics test)

        English (any intensive writing courses)

        Math (Calculus or above or AP Calculus with a minimum score of 4)

    Laboratory work in Biology, General Chemistry and Physics is essential.

    One academic semester in:

        Organic Chemistry (laboratory work if applicable)

        Biochemistry (laboratory work if applicable)

    Proficiency in Spanish and Mandarin is preferred. Moreover, the knowledge of Integral Social Sciences such as Political Science, Global Health, Psychology, Sociology, Statistics, and Biochemistry is considered as a positive factor.

    Entry Test

    The Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) is the fundamental requirement of ISMMS for admission into the MD Program. ISMMS accepts the MCAT scores of an applicant for the past three years of their matriculation start date.

    Recommendation Letters

    Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS) requires letters of recommendation with the application. The letters should be submitted through the applicant’s AMCAS account. The conditions for the ideal recommendation letters are:

        The recommender must be from your college’s premedical advisory committee.

    Or alternatively,

        The recommender can be a science faculty member at the applicant’s university or college

        One recommendation letter must be from a non-science faculty member

    The recommender must know the applicant well enough to describe their attributes objectively and judge their performance critically.

    Primary Application

    Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS) takes part in the American College Application System. Therefore, all applicants are requested to submit their application to Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS) through AMCAS, which typically starts accepting applications in May.

    Application Review

    The Medical School Admissions Committee is composed of Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS) faculty members and some senior medical students so that the team is diverse. The Committee evaluates all the applications one-by-one, holistically and thoroughly. The main factors that the Medical School Admissions Committee considers while evaluating the applications are an applicant’s undergraduate academic achievements, their passion about the field of medicine, and other life experiences.  Moreover, an applicant’s work experience, entry test scores, and recommendations letters also play a vital role in the assessment process. The Admissions Committee of the Icahn School of Medicine seeks those applicants who are dedicated to becoming the leaders in the next generation of expert clinicians, physician advocates, physician-scientists, and medical educators.The ideal candidates possess the attributes like being empathetic and accepting towards others, and having an open mind, and being dedicated, passionate and enthusiastic towards medical sciences. A candidate should also be well-organized, collaborative and adjustable as well as being self and socially aware.

    Interviews

    Those candidates who are invited for an interview have to arrive at the campus at their own expense. The interview also gives them an opportunity to meet students and faculty members of ISMMS. There are two 30-minute, one-on-one interviews.  The interviewer panel is composed of either two faculty members or a faculty member and senior ISMMS student. All of these are the members of the Medical School Admissions Committee.     Transfer Students

    The Icahn School of Medicine does not process applications from students who have matriculated or transferred from other medical schools.


Life at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS)

    Student Engagement

    Students at ISMMS have numerous opportunities through which they can learn outside the classroom and enrich their medical, educational experience. ISMMS provides many platforms where students can interact with school leadership at all levels, from the chairs and deans to the CEO and trustees. The notable forums for student engagement include:

        East Harlem Health Outreach Partnership (EHHOP): EHHOP is a free student-run health clinic which serves the uninsured residents of the East Harlem community.

        MedDocs: It is a nine-week after-school program conducted twice each year to teach high school students about the heart and related diseases.

        MedStart: A summer program offered to the students of the East Harlem middle school who are keen to learn about science and medicine.

        Human Rights and Social Justice Scholars Program: A student-established program that facilitates selected students to involve in community service and research projects under a faculty mentor, with the aim of developing the skills required to pursue social justice work in the medical field.

        Leadership Development Elective: A student-created elective established to develop competency in navigating and executing health care reform.

        Medical Mandarin: A student-run group that provides language and cultural competency education, to train current and future health professionals to become better communicators and caregivers who appreciate the particulars of Chinese cultural traditions and their impact on healthcare.

        Medicina en Espanol: It offers three separate course modules with different language proficiency levels (beginner, intermediate and advanced) to the first- and second-year medical students.

        Mount Sinai Human Rights Program (MSHRP): A faculty and student-run program that allows the integrated pro bono medical care and social services to survivors of torture and asylum seekers to the U.S. The group is devoted to a world united against the cruel behavior towards people.

    Student Housing at the Icahn School of Medicine

    All the students that are enrolled in the MD program or Ph.D. programs in the ISMMS are guaranteed on-campus accommodation. Students are given the Jane B. Aron Residence Hall as the subsidized housing option. The residence hall includes a 24-hour doorman, a fitness room, an entertainment lounge with a TV, piano, and laundry facilities.

    Student Health Center

    The Student Health Center’s main goal is to provide best-quality care to all the students. Student Health Center offers services like physical exams, illness visits, vaccine administration, sexually transmitted infection and HIV testing, gynecologic exams, and medication refills.

    Awards and Honor Societies

    ISMMS keeps a close eye on students ’performance. The assessment of a student’s clinical, research, and community outreach performance leads to their recognition through awards and acceptance to honor societies. The main awards and honor societies are:

    1.    Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS)

    The underlying idea of the Gold Foundation is “those attributes and behaviors that emanate from a deep sensitivity and respect for others, including full acceptance of all cultural and ethnic backgrounds” and “is exemplified through compassionate, empathetic treatment of all persons.” Therefore the GHHS recognizes those students who have proved themselves to be exceptional by their humanism. The nomination happens at the end of third year and selection is done in August.

    2.    Distinction in Research

    This award is for the students who publish a peer-reviewed manuscript being the first author or who submit a first-author manuscript that is judged to be of publication quality by an ad hoc Distinction in Research Committee.

    3.    Distinction in Medical Education (DIME)

    DIME recognizes those students who have proved to be the leaders in the medical education by developing and implementing a scholarly project related to the field of medical education. Distinction in Medical Education targets those students who have dedicated significant time to, and demonstrated excellence in, teaching, mentoring, education administration, curriculum development or assessment.

    4.    Graduation Awards

        Dr. Arthur H. Aufses, Sr. Prize in Surgery: It is given to a student entering the field of general surgery or a surgical subspecialty, who has exhibited excellence in the surgical clerkship.

        Dr. Barry Coller Award: It is awarded to a graduating student entering internal medicine who has demonstrated distinction and professionalism in the clinical realm.

        Mrs. David A. Dreiling Surgery Prize in Memory of her Mother, Florence L. Oppenheimer: It is given to a student going into a surgical subspecialty, with prominent scholarly efforts.

        The Eugene W. Friedman, MD Prize for Clinical Excellence: It is awarded to a graduating student who will carry on their residency at The Mount Sinai Hospital in general surgery and exhibit dedication of exemplary clinical skills.

        Dr. John Bookman Memorial Prize: This award recognizes distinction in academic accomplishment for a student specializing in internal medicine.

        Milton C. Engel, MD Award in Geriatric Medicine: It is conferred on a graduating student who has surpassed in geriatric medicine.

        Ellen Parker Memorial Award for Outstanding Community Service in Geriatrics: It is awarded to a student who has shown initiative and ingenuity in improving the quality of life of older adults in underprivileged communities.

        James Felt Memorial Prize for Highest Overall Standing: This award is given to the student who has displayed the highest all-around performance throughout the medical school.

This community involvement includes The East Harlem Health Outreach Partnership primarily. The Partnership was established by the students of Mount Sinai. The aim was to create a health partnership with the East Harlem community that can provide the uninsured residents of East Harlem with quality health care, regardless of ability to pay.

    Curriculum

    The medical curriculum at ISMMS is structured to focus on the standard division of medical education in the USA. In the first two years of study, the students learn the medical sciences, and in the next two years, they study the clinical sciences.  The first two years strictly pass/fail while the next two years feature clinical rotations at Mount Sinai Hospital and other affiliated hospitals and are graded.

    The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai wants to achieve some major goals, and these goals are the motive behind their curriculum. These are:

        Students should have an early and comprehensive patient care experience, with continuous clinical responsibilities across a wide array of disease.

        The ISMMS ‘s curriculum is such that it is responsive to the educational needs of students, is flexible to different learning styles, is engaging and continuously evolving, and supports professional and individual growth.

        The curriculum emphasizes the combination of biological and social elements of health and disease.

The Office for Student Affairs

The Office for Student Affairs performs many functions to keep students comfortable in the School as well as have an exceptional learning experience. The most notable efforts are:

    Student Counseling

    The student advisory services start during orientation and continue through the four years of medical education. Students are allocated faculty advisors so that they can communicate about their problems. Moreover, mentors for research projects and community projects are also available to offer personal support.

    Career Counseling

    Other than counseling related to life at ISMMS, students have access to career counselors. These counselors are designated by the clinical departments to provide guidance concerning that discipline. EventsThe Office for Student Affairs conducts the main student events such as the Orientation, the White Coat Ceremony, Match Day, Commencement, Convocation, SINAInnovations, and Research Day.

    White Coat Ceremony

    The White Coat Ceremony is a sign of the student initiation into professional training. A batch of medical students will be “coated” and will take an oath to advocate scientific excellence and the empathetic care of patients.

    Convocation

    The Convocation day marks the commencement of the academic year for ISMMS. During the convocation ceremony, the school leadership shares the institution’s strategic vision.

    Medical Student Research Day

    The Medical Student Research Day is to showcase and educate about new knowledge contributed by students through their research at ISMMS.

    Match Day

    After four years of hard work at ISMMS, a batch of all medical students attend the Match Day to find out where they will spend the next phase of medical training. Each student receives an envelope that contains the residency information.

    Commencement

    The Commencement takes place in May each year. The event is a celebration of the achievements of the graduating students.

    SINAInnovations

    Each year, the office of the student affairs conducts the SINAInnovations conference, which focuses at redefining how innovation is taught, incentivized, and assisted within an academic medical center

    The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is striving to support diversity and inclusion in the campus. The research, clinical, and educational experiences are all made to be worthwhile for every individual of the community.
