The University of Indiana, School of Medicine was established in 1903. The School of Medicine is a national leader in medical research and education. With more than 60 academic departments and specialty departments across nine campuses in the state and strong clinical partnerships with the most advanced hospitals and physician networks in Indiana, the school continues to advance its mission to prepare healers and transform health in and around Indiana and the world. In order to recognize and encourage faculty educators who demonstrate the commitment of the school to prepare future physicians and medical researchers and to support peer development, Indianapolis Medical College presents worthy faculty with teaching and mentoring awards as well as endowed ranks, lectureships, professorships, and other honors. IU School of Medicine is a state-wide school that educates future doctors in Indiana and conducts advanced medical research. Accreditations

IU Medical school has an accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). Indiana University, School of Medicine first obtained accreditation from LCME after World War II. Medical school education programs must meet the national standards outlined in a medical school’s manual, roles and structure in order to become and remain accredited. In 2017, the LCME approved the full accreditation status of the IU School of Medicine from 2024-2025.

Admission Procedure

Requirements

In addition to the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), MD candidates must have earned ninety (90) credit hours from an accredited U.S. or Canadian higher education institution. Until applying to the Indiana University School of Medicine, candidates will shadow a total of three doctors and engage in practical medical and service-learning programs.

Required Courses

    • One year of general and organic chemistry, physics, and biology along with minimum two-hour laboratory
    • One semester of biochemistry
    • One course of social science and one course of behavioral science
    • Requirements may be ongoing at the time of application. The MD Admissions Committee reserves the right to decide which courses meet the requirements of the curriculum.

Early Decision Program

The Early Decision Program is exclusive to students wishing to make a decision to enroll at the Medicine School of Indiana University. The Early Decision System AMCAS submission is due August 1. Applicants who are not admitted during the Early Decision Program process are put in the standard applicant pool and may apply after October 1 to other medical schools.

Application Process

Upon submitting an application for AMCAS from a prospective student, IU School of Medicine will receive a notification. Only applicants invited to interview will be sent a submission for additional information. On the basis of a systematic review process, all candidates invited to interview are decided. Selected applicants are required to complete the application for IU Graduate School and submit the application fee. Applications qualified will receive an invitation for the interview. Interviews are held from September to February.

Basic Science

IU School of Medicine’s medical education and research starts with basic science, the basis for health assessment, diagnosis, and care. Researchers in basic science is exploring the foundations of biology, including genetics, cell behavior, anatomy, immunology, and pharmacology. Medical students are forced to apply basic science to clinical situations and the graduate degree of the hospital.

Facilities

Library

The Ruth Lilly Medical Library provides access to the emerging science and biomedical literature of the world to doctors, researchers, and students at the IU School of Medicine. The Library and its staff work throughout all nine campuses to provide a shared learning environment with the information tools and skills needed to prepare healers, advance treatment and promote health care. Librarians offer a wide range of classes based on the needs of students, faculty, and staff at IU School of Medicine. A library liaison can collaborate with faculty members to develop a specialization, curriculum, or study assignment customized class. Circulation personnel on the first floor of the Ruth Lilly Medical Library in Indianapolis are available at the front desk. The Content Management and Distribution department of the library is experienced in providing documents, book chapters and other print resources outside the Library’s collections or subscriptions for the IU School of Medicine for users searching for full text of an article or book chapter. Each House and College is assigned a librarian, and each department, institute, center, and unit of the IU School of Medicine is assigned a liaison librarian. Librarians also participate actively in all phases of the MD curriculum and work as part of the school’s graduate medical education program with residents and fellows.

Housing

All first-year students are required to live for at least two semesters in the University housing. You can only ask for exemption if you fit into one of the categories mentioned below:
    • Your parents/guardians live with you.
    • You are a student with transfer case and have at least earned 15 credit hours from an accredited university
    • You are 21 years old before starting university
    • You are married or have children
    • You belong to an independent student organization, that is well known

Clubs and Societies of Indiana University

When we say that IU has a lot to do, we don’t brag. There are more than 750 student organizations — and that number is constantly growing. Some are old, such as the Chess Club, the Cycling Club, and the Government of IU Students. The recent clubs which are the talk of the town include Chinese calligraphy club and the Gaming Club.

Indiana Memorial Union

For more than 100 years, the Indiana Memorial Union has been at the heart of Indiana University Bloomington. The IMU has been the center of the campus since its earliest days, providing a welcoming place for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and visitors to connect with each other and the campus while eating, relaxing, studying, playing, or celebrating.
