Life after Getting Into a Medical College

Firstly, if you make it this far, then congratulations! Because getting into a medical college is no less than a challenge, not only in India but all over the world too. And if you get selected in the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) then you are definitely one of the hard workers who deserve that their talent is groomed by one of the best professionals in the medical industry. By the intention of preparing you for the future we would like to point out that life at a medical college is not easy, may it be any medical college. Even the most intelligent and hardworking people sometimes find themselves frustrated and tangled in all the work along with extra-curricular activities. So to give you a heads up and a few guidelines on how to deal with basic issues that students may face in a medical college are listed below:

Managing Time

The hardest thing to do at not just a medical college but at any university is managing time. If you don’t get to it in your first few days, you will have to face a lot of extra hardships later on. To avoid that, in the first few days at your college, take note of how things work, what processes are followed, and what goes where, etc. Once you get the gist of it all, make a rough schedule. Compartmentalize your work. Assign a time to each task and try to complete it in the assigned time. The more you keep on your schedule the easier things will get.

Next, you should get used to making a daily to-do list. All the homework, assignment, or any other task that you get, should go into that to-do list with a due date. Use applications to set reminders to help you complete your work before the due date. What is even better is that you don’t leave the tasks to the last minute. Procrastination will have to wait. Getting to your tasks as soon as possible will help save you from a lot of future trouble. Keeping a list of all the tasks with their due dates and following a schedule regularly will make sure that you never miss a deadline.

Self Help

Conditions will not always be favorable in life and hence not always at your college too. College life sometimes even gets to the best of students, who then find themselves frustrated and unable to continue. Some things are not under a single person’s control so make sure that you give your all to the things that you actually can control instead of spending energy on trying to change the things that you cannot. A lot of times, only attending lectures is not enough. Suppose, for one course, you end up with a lecturer whose methods of teaching do not resonate with your methods of learning. Even though you attend each and every class, you still have trouble understanding the lectures. In that case, what you have to do is ask around for help while that knowledge is still fresh in your mind. Ask a fellow classmate or a friend to explain it to you. If not, ask the CR or the TA to help but do not leave things at the last minute.

What has been proven to help students the most is group studying. With your group of friends, set aside time for group study sessions at least once a week if not every other day. Don’t hesitate from asking for help and don’t hesitate from helping someone else out either. Teaching others can actually help you in memorizing knowledge. So instead of skipping over a topic because the lecture was hard to understand you should sit with friends and understand from each other. If one desires, they can find out several ways to help themself.

Dr. Najeeb Lectures

In the off-chance that you find yourself in a situation described above, and none of the above-mentioned methods work, or even if you don’t feel like trying out all of them just yet, you can always go to Dr. Najeeb’s Lectures for help. These are video lectures which are a great source for self-studying. Dr. Najeeb’s Lectures are the world’s most popular medical Lectures, covering all the topics of Gross Anatomy, Neuro-anatomy, Embryology, Histology, Physiology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Immunology, and Pathology. These lectures cover almost all the topics in the current medical curriculum of most medical colleges. They contain visualization of what you study in your books. The hand-drawn illustrations in these lectures make it very easy to grasp the concepts. Furthermore, one can get lifetime access to these lectures and even download the app to avail them anytime, anywhere.

Clinical Learning

Just as no two human beings can ever be the same in their life experiences, no two students can have the same clinical experience. Your experience will be what you make of it. Keep in mind that whatever you learn is not to be forgotten. You are opting for a career that requires retention of this knowledge for a lifetime. To look at the short term aspects, what you learn will be there again in your finals, and again during residency when you start treating actual patients. So whatever you learn, make sure you understand it completely now, casual lookups are fine to jock up your memory when required but if you don’t understand the concept you will have to do it later on.

Reward Yourself

From the tough competition, rigorous studying, constant exams, and all that hard work, it is necessary for you to take some time out for yourself. Self-care is very important if you wish to succeed at anything in life. So to relax and take some time off from all the hard work, it is required that you ease your mind. Find a hobby or anything that would qualify as extracurricular and take out some time from your busy schedule for this. You need to reward yourself for your continuous hardships. Apart from that, it will help you have a fresh mind when you go back to your work so maybe you could learn better or come up with more creative things (whatever is required).

Managing People

When it comes to people management, it is required that you stay attentive from day one. Notice the people around you and pick your friends carefully. Avoid conflicts; if you do end up in one try resolving it as soon as possible because it would be advantageous in the long run. Try to be a little sharp-minded and keep yourself from getting exploited. Help out others, this way you can make more allies than enemies and they could end up helping you in your time of need.

And lastly, we would like to wish you the best of lucks for your journey ahead.

I'm grappling with my online studies in Infectious Disease at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. It's made me realize what a visual learner I still am. So these vids are making what was murky crystal clear. While I am easily distracted when I have to do hours of straight reading, I am glued to the videos. I've looked for a series of such videos for months. A million thanks - Dr Najeeb has a true passion for teaching and can convey highly complex topics in an understandable and fun way.
