University of South Carolina medical school was founded in 1824 and continues the tradition of excellence in education, research, and patient care. MUSC trains and educates over 3,000 students and 700 residents in six colleges and has nearly 13,000 employees including about 1,500 faculty members. As the only public health science center in the state and the largest non-federal employer in Charleston, the university and its affiliates have combined annual budgets of more than $2.4 billion, with an annual economic effect of almost $4 billion and total research funding of more than $284 million. MUSC operates a medical center with 700 beds, which includes a nationally recognized hospital for children.

The mission of the South Carolina Medical University (MUSC) is to “preserve and optimize human life in and beyond South Carolina through education, research, and patient care.” In 2015, MUSC developed a new strategic plan known as “Imagine MUSC 2020” with the goals of first engaging patients & families, advancing new knowledge and scientific discoveries, embracing diversity and inclusion, fostering innovation. The MUSC Office for Continuing Medical
Education (CME) plays an integral role in this initiative by providing quality continuing
medical education and continuing professional development to enhance patient
safety and improving clinical outcomes by finding and eliminating discrepancies between
existing clinical procedures and appropriate evidence-based healthcare.
MUSC’s Office CME is committed to supporting physicians and other health care providers ‘ lifelong learning process by offering high-quality educational opportunities intended to advance the quality and safety of patient care in South Carolina by improving learner knowledge and success in action. The MUSC Office of CME is a strategic and organizational resource for the creation and development of continuing education activities for physicians, health professionals, and interprofessional teams. Through collaborative relationships with university departments and organizations in our state and region, MUSC’s Office CME can provide leadership in improving healthcare.
Based on inequalities in healthcare in the state of South Carolina and other southeastern states, programs of MUSC CME tackle primary care, specialty and subspecialty content areas across the different medical disciplines. Our educational programs are based on knowledge-based on evidence from basic medical sciences, clinical fields, public health, behavioral medicine, and preventive medicine. CME’s MUSC office is dedicated to continuous monitoring of content areas to provide scientifically rigorous, credible, unbiased, and commercially neutral educational content. A key component of our CME activities includes, where applicable, the core competencies of the competencies of ACGME / ABMS, IOM, and IPEC.
Expected Results of Programs
Knowledge: Post-test evaluations and use of audience feedback systems on activity material
are used to determine what learners know as a result of taking part in the activity.
Competence: self-reported planned changes to practice, awareness of obstacles to change, identification of planned actions including commitment to change (CTC) and engagement in case studies and centered simulation interactions assess the capacity of the learner to apply information.
Performance: Follow-up reports on whether learners have adopted improvements, and performance evaluations in practice following performance enhancement exercises test the implementation of knowledge, skills, and behaviors in practice by learners.
Patient-Outcomes: In practice reports, evaluation of state-wide or national performance represents improvements in health care professionals and team performance that have a positive impact on specific populations.
CME’s MUSC office actively seeks to develop better strategies for evaluating results for use with programs and projects in education. Policies are applied to ensure that activities are not under the influence of commercial constraints.

University of South Carolina medical school Admission
The American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) is a branch of the College of Medicine. Applications can be found on-line on the American Medical College Association website.
- Applicants must submit an AMCAS application to be considered for admission to the regular MD program or the Early Decision program at the MUSC College of Medicine.
- The Early Decision program is only available to in-state students.
- The AMCAS Early Decision deadline is August 1 and action is taken by the Admissions Committee by October 1.
- Students whose first choice of medical school is MUSC are encouraged to apply if they have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 and a minimum MCAT score of 506.
- When the confirmed AMCAS application is received by MUSC (4-6 weeks after it has been sent to AMCAS), all applicants are sent an email to the MUSC website where they can access the Secondary Application. All applicants receive the Secondary Application. After filing this application, a non-refundable fee of $95 is required. Applicants not filing this Secondary Request are not considered for review.
- Recommendation letters with a maximum of five letters are needed. Letters should be written by people who know you well and who can relate to your dedication, your medicine passion and medical school preparation. Another letter must come from a professor of science; the other letter can come from science or non-science professors, an employer, a community leader, a mentoring physician.
- Applicants chosen for interviews are invited to participate in an interview day via email at the MUSC College of Medicine campus. Every applicant must have 3 interviews.
- Admission tender is extended rolling after 1 November*. An applicant offering a place in the next entrant class is required to accept or decline the offer within two weeks. A deposit of $485 must go with acceptance of an admission bid. The deposit is fully refundable before or on 15 May, after written notice that a claimant wishes to withdraw from the university.
- Acceptance decisions are submitted on a monthly basis to the interviewed students. Those accepted are given two weeks to accept or reject the acceptance offer.
- AMCAS becomes available as an option for accepted students. This is a valuable tool that is highly encouraged for applicants to use.
- The choice is only for approved students. This choice implies that it has refused all other admission offers and MUSC is the medical school of choice.
University of South Carolina medical school Eligibility Criteria:
- Must be a resident of the USA, U.S. Permanent resident or citizen of Canada upon submission. You will apply for the International Medicine Program if you are not in one of these groups.
- Receipt of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in the United States or Canada is required before enrollment. Online coursework or shift work from schools abroad is not possible.

Seek Help Early
When you feel that you need support in any way, whether through counseling, psychiatrist, tutoring or academic support, don’t be afraid to seek it out. Having help is not a sign of weakness but a sign of maturity and awareness of oneself. Understanding when to ask for assistance, and getting it, is very important for when you try to solve problems after a big delay the problems are no more solvable. If it is some concept you don’t understand and you ask for help a night before exams you won’t get any assistance. If it is some disease either physical or mental and you ask for help when it has reached the last stage that assistance won’t do you any good. So, you must seek help early.
