About Meharry Medical College

Meharry Medical College, situated in Nashville, Tennessee, is among the state’s oldest and biggest majority black university health education institutions committed to training surgeons, doctors, scholars, and health care policy specialists. Established as Central Tennessee College’s Medical Department in 1876, Meharry was also the first medical school for African Americans in the South. It was commissioned independently in 1915. Meharry now has a school of medicine, school for dentistry, and graduate school and it hosts the Meharry Robert Wood Johnson Institute for Health Policy. The programs include a Doctor of Medicine, a Doctor of Dental Surgery, a Master of Public Health Science, a Master of Science, and a Ph.D. Meharry is an Organization linked to the United Methodist Church. A 2010 study released in the Record books of Internal Medicine placed Meharry among the top three primary healthcare physicist producers nationally. Meharry is already a major institution for producing African American Ph.D.’s. in biomedicine. Meharry Medical College also publishes the Journal of Health Care for the Vulnerable and Underprivileged, a community health journal, in contrast to delivering quality technical medical training, outstanding patient care, and caring community engagement.

Meharry Medical College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). M.D. program is accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). Dental school and all degrees related to dentistry are accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). Public Health and Public health-related programs are accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH)

Admission Requirements

Admissions in Medical require a Bachelor’s Degree. Premedical schooling should be completed at an accredited college in the U.S or Canada along with the course mentioned below as admission criteria.

MCAT

A Medical College Admission Examination (MCAT) should be completed by all candidates before acceptance by the Admissions Committee. The MCAT is focused on the information obtained from the appropriate courses of science. The test should be conducted no later than September of the year before MCAT scores older than three years from the date of registration are not accepted.

Letters of Recommendation

Meharry admission candidates must specifically forward all letters of recommendation to AMCAS, which will send the letters via email to the office. AMCAS can accept letters from VirtualEvals users, Interfolio users, and through the U.S. Service by email. The addresses at which the letters are to be submitted will appear in the AMCAS Letter Request Form.

- Applicants must send a doctor’s letter of recommendation. Letters will include details of the applicant’s behavior near a patient and their capacity to function in a medical setting. It can represent shadowing, volunteering, or the experience of working.
- Applicants may send one pre-med letter from the counselor or committee, which includes the names and divisions of the committee members.
- Both letters should be signed.
- College science professors who have instructed the applicant in the appropriate science courses or suggested top-level science courses must write the science letters. These letters will be on the letterhead with the signature line academic credentials.
- Non-traditional students who have been out of college for more than 2 years and who have not taken any recent preconditions or other classes must send a letter from their immediate supervisor/employer and the medical report required.
- Letters that are not considered for the completion of the admission file include:
  1. Letters from family members, parents, family friends
  2. Letters from coaches, personal trainers
  3. Letters from veterinarians
  4. Letters from dentists, family physicians, or podiatrists.

Secondary Application

Upon receipt of the application from AMCAS, it is examined and all qualified candidates will be issued a link to the online additional application. The secondary application enables the candidate to define his/her activities even more as they correspond to the university’s mission. University Net will charge a non-refundable $65 fee at the time it completes the application online.

Library

The Meharry Medical College Library’s goal is to help students, teachers, doctors, and practitioners by giving access to existing, reliable biomedical knowledge services that successfully incorporate best practice technologies. The Library strives, by providing outstanding facilities, to enhance its position as an integral participant in student learning, research, and patient care. The MMCL is concentrating its research progressively on online tools to improve the value and availability of information around the campus and from homes. MMCL offers access through an interactive Virtual Library to 5,634 online journals, 6,526 eBooks, 260 repositories, and 1,064 web-resources. The MMCL also gives access via the Ovid program to complete-text journal articles, and through the ScienceDirect portal to over 1,000 clinical and research-oriented full-text journals. AccessMedicine offers medical manuals for patients, such as the Principles of Internal Medicine and Current Clinical Diagnosis & Care. Services and facilities provide distribution, creation of collections, index, computer-based bibliographic search, knowledge retrieval and use guidance, automated library network, rare books. Materials inaccessible in the library are accessed by reciprocal agreements (interlibrary loan) from other medical libraries at no expense. Good network connectivity covers internet connectivity to laptops, tabs, and phones in the library. The library developed the mobile technology site using LibGuides to reach students if they’re in the mobile domain. Housing Facilities

Residence Life Office helps make your house Meharry Medical Residence away from home. Living and learning occur day and night, much of it in and around residential housing communities at university. The Residence Life staff directs and helps you and offers a comfortable, happy, and safe on-campus living experience. University’s residential environments are within a few miles of the academic buildings of the university and feature common areas for community building. Dining is a gathering spot, it promotes and embraces culture, it connects people as well as enables them to discuss group perspectives. For students to understand and demonstrate corporate responsibility, the dining plan is the ideal environment to learn about various cultures and relate their classwork to the actual world.
