    In 1971, Stony Brook School of medicine was established as the Stony Brook University School of Medicine in recognition of the philanthropic investments of 111 families at Renaissance Technologies in SB University which also includes the School of Medicine, on 21st November 2018, SB University School of Medicine was renamed to Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University.

Undergraduate Medical Education:

Stony Brook School of medicine offers MD Program in Undergraduate Medical Education category.

    Stony Brook Medical School Admission Procedure:

    Applications must be submitted in the early application season which basically, starts in May and ends on December 1. The Renaissance School of Medicine also participates in the AMCAS (American Medical College Application Service). In addition to the AMCAS application, applicants must submit a Supplemental Renaissance School of Medicine Application (available upon receipt of a verified AMCAS application only). Applicant’s premedical advisor’s letter of evaluation is also required. If any of these doesn’t exist, then letters can be obtained from two instructors and one of them should be in a science field and then submitted.

    There is a non-refundable application fee of $100 which should be submitted with the candidate’s on-line supplemental application materials. If there is any request for the fee waiver, then it must be accompanied by a recommendation from the financial aid advisor at the candidate’s school. If candidates receive an AMCAS fee waiver, the college’s supplemental fee will be waived as well.

    Financial Information:

    Tuition for the 2019-20 entering class at the four State University of New York Medical Schools is $43,670 per academic year for New York State residents and for out of state residents, it is $66,160 per academic year. This fee is subject to change and approval by the SUNY Board of Trustees. Miscellaneous fees at the Renaissance School of Medicine are approximately $3,300 per academic year which includes equipment and lab fees. The cost of supplies, equipment and books is approximately $2,400 for the first year.

    If a student wants to buy a computer, an additional $2,500 may be added to his/her costs. Expenses for succeeding years are correspondingly lower. Incurred expenses (room, board, travel, etc.) are estimated at $25,000 for years 1 and 2; and $28,000 for years 3 and 4.

    Graduate Programs in Pharmacology:

    The Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology Ph.D. Program:

    This program is an interdepartmental Graduate Program that includes faculty from the Department of Pharmacological Sciences which provides academic experience and comprehensive research ranging from the basic biological sciences to complex concepts such as imaging of biological processes in cell and tissue cultures and mammals.

    Admissions:

    All candidates for admission to the Ph.D. Those who want to get enrolled in the Training Program, they should apply online through the Website of Stony Brook University Graduate School. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the program, the school accepts students with a wide variety of undergraduate majors. A typical applicant will also have taken upper-level undergraduate courses in Biochemistry, Organic Chemistry and at least one of the following: Cell Biology, Genetics, Physiology, or Neurobiology.

  • S. Program in Biomedical Sciences, Molecular, and Cellular Pharmacology Track:
  • This program offers a great scientific basis for students pursuing careers in the government, academic, and pharmaceutical sectors. This program also allow students to complement and increase their academic backgrounds in development for further training in Ph.D. programs and a large variety of health-related schools such as veterinary, dental, and medical, among others.

    Admissions:

    It is compulsory for candidates accepted into the MS Program to have strong scientific backgrounds with an average grade of B or more than this in their UG coursework. However, UG coursework in physical chemistry or biochemistry is not required but it will be an asset to the candidate’s application. Research experience is also not a requirement for admission but it is viewed favorably. GRE scores are also not a requirement but a strong performance on the GRE will reflect the candidate’s performance positively. Admission to the program is highly competitive and is based on available space within the program.

Stony Brook Medical School Facilities:

  • Health Sciences Library:
  • HSL assist teaching, patient care, and research in 6 programs: Public Health, Medicine, Social Welfare, Dental Medicine, Nursing, and Health Technology and Management. HSL also aids patient care and research for the Long Island State Veterans Home and University Hospital. This library is also known as a Resource Library for the National Network of Libraries of Medicine that is managed by the National Library of Medicine, a division of NIH.

    Currently, more than 4,200 electronic books, almost 20 print journals and 95,000 books, more than 10,000 electronic journals and a print collection of over 170,000 monograph and serial volumes is managed by HSL. Additionally, HSL also provides access to about 290 primarily web-based electronic research databases, including ScienceDirect, ClinicalKey, ACCESSMedicine, DynaMed, UpToDate, MEDLINE, and Web of Science. A lot of sessions are offered throughout the year on improving the effectiveness of managing information resources that are offered throughout the year.

  • Recreation and Wellness:
  • Stony Brook University celebrated the opening of the Campus Recreation Center, a state-of-the-art 85,000 square-foot facility, on October 19, 2012. Located between the Stony Brook Student Union and the Indoor Sports Complex, the new facility is devoted to the health and wellness of Stony Brook students, faculty and staff. It has become the center of activity on campus, averaging more than 2,000 users daily. The primary goal of the Recreation and Wellness Center is to improve the quality of life for faculty, students, and staff with the scope to recreate in a fun, safe, friendly, and professional environment.

    The facility which is around $37.5M presents more than 100 pieces of cardiovascular equipment, practice and competition spaces for sports clubs and open recreation and 3 floors for intramural programs. Features include a three-court gymnasium; a multi-activity court for basketball, soccer, roller hockey, volleyball, and badminton; three wellness studios; nearly 17,000 square-feet of combined free-weights; fitness, cardio, and stretching space; a 1/10th mile track; locker rooms and showers; sports club storage rooms and wireless Internet service. The facility hosts more than 60 fitness classes per week and provides employment opportunities for more than 250 students.

  • It was observed that during initial years of the medical school, students prefer to live on campus or in nearby communities because a lot of instruction takes place during that time. Students often share single-family homes provided by SB. Access to an automobile may be an important consideration, especially while pursuing clinical clerkships at geographically dispersed sites. Public transportation in the area is limited. Campus provides:

Student Life:

After getting into Stony Brook School of Medicine:

If getting into a medical college was easy, everybody would’ve been a doctor today, right? We aren’t talking about medical education here at the moment but even getting into a GOOD medical college isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Getting into an institute like Stony Brook is everyone’s dream and to be honest, a very big achievement too! You have worked so hard for this and finally, you got into your favorite college. Now, first things first, don’t be overwhelmed. You have passed one of the toughest steps in this journey but now, this is where the real journey begins.

You have to face a lot of challenges in this journey but don’t worry, you can overcome all of those by being a little bit more focused. We’ll share a few tips with you that’ll help you survive and succeed in the medical college.

    Stay Focused and Set Realistic Goals:

    From the first day, you need to be very focused on your goals. Nowadays, when you have tons of distractions in your life, it is difficult to stay focused, especially, while studying. You need to remind yourself every day that how hard you’ve worked all your life to get here to stay away from all the distractions which are bothering you. Focus is the key here. Once, you know your goals and you’re focused on how to achieve those goals, a lot of things will become easy for you automatically.

    Now, when we say set REALISTIC goals for yourself, what does it mean? Don’t pressurize or overburden yourself by setting up goals that aren’t possible for you to achieve because it’ll lead to demotivation in the future when they won’t be accomplished. Now, it doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t set any high goals for yourself but in fact, you should start from the ground, build them from scratch and then move forward. Once, you’ve set some goals for yourself, you’ll have a direction to move into which will help you stay focused.

    Create a suitable Study Plan:

    We talked about how the focus is key while studying. Now, when it comes to staying focus while studying, you need to take care of a few other things too. First of all, develop a habit of PRE-STUDY. Don’t leave stuff for the last moment because it is going to harm you in the long-run when your brain wouldn’t accept a lot of information at once. Yes, it happens with not only you but with everyone. Most of the students keep on skipping things which they don’t understand due to which they can’t understand another thing but now, they don’t understand anything. Confusing, right?

    Take care of yourself:

    Amidst all the difficulties of a medical student, the self-care factor can’t be ignored. Your health has a huge impact on your studies and productivity. Be a part of several clubs and societies that are present in your school and engage yourself in the activities to give yourself a break from studies. Studies have shown that participating in these extra-curricular activities not only benefits your body but also your brain and results in increased productivity.

    Ask for Help:

    If you ever feel overworked, stressed or just in need of advice or a friendly ear, your university likely has a plethora of resources on campus. Feel like you need help managing a heavy workload? Head to your university’s Student Success Centre or student’s union or make an appointment with an academic guidance counselor to search for help. Feel homesick and burned out? Don’t be afraid to reach out to people you trust or your university’s student health services for guidance.

    There is no shame in admitting that you are having a tough time and asking for help – all of us do at times and you’re not alone. Your health, physical and emotional, is so crucial for keeping you on your feet and moving forward so that you can enjoy your university years to the fullest.
