About Texas A&M University Health Science Center

The next generation of innovators, activists, caregivers, and lifesavers are being developed by Texas A&M. The relatively young, entrepreneurial mindset, established in 1999 to put together Texas A&M University Health Science Center healthcare careers, allows us to keep up with a rapidly evolving healthcare environment while not losing the ‘land-grant roots’. The university tackles wellbeing by cutting-edge medical research, service, and education.

    History of Texas A&M University Health Science Center

    Founded in 1999, the Texas A&M Health Science Center was founded as The Texas A&M University System’s independent state agency to integrate all health-related agencies in Texas A&M into one comprehensive health institution. The academic founding divisions included the College of Medicine, the College of Dentistry, the Institute of Biosciences and Technology and the planned School of Rural Public Health. With the founding of the Irma Lerma Rangel College of Pharmacy in 2006 and a College of Nursing in 2008, the college merged into a Texas A&M University academic entity in 2013 while retaining its status as a state agency. As Texas ‘ most comprehensive health science center, the Texas A&M Health Science Facility is committed to meeting today’s and tomorrow’s health care needs by forward-thinking education in medical research, training, and health care careers. The Health Science Center operates eight campuses located in Bryan-College Station, Corpus Christi, Dallas, Houston, Kingsville, McAllen, Round Rock, and Temple, affecting almost every county in the state of Texas with education, research, and outreach programs. This geographically dispersed, the multi-disciplinary model enables inter-professional training, collaborative research, and patient care that supports the Health Science Center and Texas A&M University’s common objectives.

    Priorities

    Texas A&M University, established by the Morrill Act of 1862, was created to serve. Today, the University is leading the way in 21st-century healthcare. Texas A&M identified three focus areas that respect the origins of the land-grant and preserve operation at the center of the project.

  • At least 90 credit hours of undergraduate courses, preferably a baccalaureate degree, at an accredited college or university in the United States
  • 47 credit hours of pre-requisite courses in English, Mathematics, Genetics, Biochemistry, General and Organic Chemistry and Physics
  • MCAT
  • Registration for the MD / Ph.D. program via the Texas Medical and Dental Schools Application Service (TMDSAS) and the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS)

Degrees and Programs

    Dental Hygiene (BS) 

    The Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene meets the educational prerequisite of being qualified as a dental hygienist for State licensing. In private dental practices and clinics, public health departments, school systems, hospitals, nursing homes, and corporate health facilities, these preventive oral health practitioners operate.

    Oral Biology (MS)

    The Master of Science in Oral Biology is primarily designed to provide advanced scientific instruction to dental program graduates and students participating in a specialty clinical program at Texas A&M College of Dentistry. The curriculum is also well adapted for dental professionals from other countries than the United States who wish to gain or develop their dental research history.

    Oral Biology (Ph.D.)

    Students in the oral biology Ph.D. program receive training in the fields of craniofacial growth and evolution, bioengineering and regeneration, mineralized biology of the tissue, and neuroscience and pain. Students can study cellular and molecular mechanisms, experimental studies and clinical development, growth, aging, function, disease, and treatment studies.

    Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS)

    The curriculum leading to the Doctor of Dental Surgery degree is structured to establish generally qualified practitioners who provide the highest quality patient care while fostering scientific interest and an inquiry spirit. As one of only three Texas dental schools, its students make up almost one-third of all the dentists in the state.

    Doctor of Medicine (MD)

    Recently, an innovative medicine program was launched to add more flexibility and individualization to the educational process, to build lifelong learners, and to provide better health care for all. The program more closely integrates basic science content with the clinical context, offers earlier clinical experience and incorporates the basic science content in clinical rotations.

    Education for Healthcare Professionals (MS)

    Students in the master’s program can choose a 36-hour non-thesis track that includes a project, or participants can complete 34 hours with a thesis, which is intended to develop skills to become excellent teachers in their specialization fields. With either choice, students will learn how to research to strengthen and improve creative education programs in education in health care professions.

    MD/Ph.D.

    To highly motivated medical students pursuing careers in academic medicine, this integrated training program leading to both Doctor of Medicine and Doctorate in Philosophy degrees offers instruction in science. This preparation provides a valuable and well-balanced opportunity for medical scientists to link their study of clinical medicine to basic biomedical science and to provide unique insights into human diseases.

    MD + Business Administration (MD+MBA)

    The MD Plus Program is committed to providing students with the expertise they need to take on leadership roles in the healthcare industry, and integrating a business degree with a medical degree through Mays Business School enables graduates to excel in healthcare entrepreneurship and manage healthcare teams and organizations.

    MD + Public Health (MD+MPH)

    The MD Plus program is committed to providing students with the expertise needed to take on leadership roles in the healthcare sectors, and incorporating a Master’s degree in Public Health from the School of Public Health with a medical degree enables graduates to become key healthcare policy consultants for government and private organizations.

    MD + Master of Science (MD+MS)

    Health care delivery’s growing complexities place a premium on practitioners who recognize and meet the demands required to deliver creative, collaborative, and compassionate care. This MD Plus Program, a comprehensive five-year study course, is a roadmap for students interested in expanding their medical career choices by also obtaining a Master’s in Medical Science(MS).

    EnMed: Engineering Medicine (MD+ME)

    The new Engineering Medicine (EnMed) program enables students to get a degree in engineering along with their medical degree in an integrated five-year study course. Graduates will be well prepared to develop new treatment and medication paradigms to address a variety of health-care issues.

    MD + Education for Healthcare Professionals (MD+EDHP)

    The degree blends graduate training with a Master’s in Healthcare Professionals Education Science program. The MD+EDHP program is committed to providing the skills needed to take on leadership roles to students who wish to pursue academic teaching careers by enhancing their teaching and curriculum development awareness.

    Education for Healthcare Professionals (CERT)

    The Certificate program prepares students to teach with an interdisciplinary team in a variety of settings for students who wish to expand their knowledge of teaching and curriculum development. If the student wishes to pursue an advanced degree in the future, Coursework may be extended to the master’s degree.

    Nursing (BSN)

    The Texas A&M College of Nursing is committed to solving Texas ‘ urgent nursing shortage and is working to create the most trained nurses. Students may receive a conventional or second-degree Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and currently enrolled nurses with a degree of associate can earn their BSN online with full-time and part-time course loads.

    Nursing Education (MSN)

    The Master of Science in Nursing Education prepares the candidate to take on the role of educator by the completion of a 36-hour program in various patient care settings and higher education institutions. The course training is mainly provided online allowing students to balance career, family and other commitments while advancing their education.

    Family Nurse Practitioner (MSN)

    The Master Science in Nursing–Family Nurse Practitioner course prepares the patient to prescribe to a wide range of clients as a primary care provider while concentrating on health promotion, risk reduction, disease prevention, and disease management. Most classes are provided online, which enables students to balance job, family and other commitments while advancing their education.

    Forensic Nursing (MSN)

    The track of the Master of Science in Nursing –Forensic Nursing prepares the graduate to take care of victims and perpetrators of traumatic events or criminal acts that lead to trauma or death. When caring for their patients, it is also the responsibility of the forensic nurse to observe, identify, gather and record forensic evidence related to the traumatic event or criminal act for its subsequent use in Civil or criminal legal proceedings.

    Forensic Health Care (CERT)

    The multidisciplinary graduate certificate in forensic health care allows health care workers, protective service investigators/caseworkers, social workers, law enforcement, prosecutors and other professionals holding a minimum of a bachelor’s degree to sharpen their skills in assisting victims of violence and trauma.

    Pharmacy (PharmD)

    The Pharmacy Doctor’s degree, the first health professions program set up south of San Antonio, hires and trains skilled and compassionate future pharmacists who will provide outstanding patient care and serve as catalysts to improve pharmacy practice. Students start applying what they learned in their second year by taking part in group practice and hospital pharmacy rotations.

    Pharmacy + Business Administration (PharmD+MBA)

    The College of Pharmacy has partnered with the College of Business Administration at Texas A&M University-Kingsville to allow students to receive a Master’s degree in Business Administration while working towards a Pharmacy Doctor’s degree, training them for both the clinical aspects of pharmacy practice and management positions within pharmacies.

    Public Health (BS)

    The Bachelor of Science degree program in Public Health is focused on a health promotion and disease prevention approach to improving the quality of life of people, families, and communities. It can supplement or expand a conventional pre-health degree program based on biology for students planning to pursue professional education in medicine, nursing, related health care or other health care careers.

    Public Health (MPH)

    The Master’s degree in Public Health is a multidisciplinary, six-concentration professional degree program (epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health, occupational safety and health, health policy and management, health promotion and community health sciences) designed to provide practical training in areas related to public health practice.

    Health Administration Resident Track (MHA)

    The Master of Health Administration program helps students practice administration in health-related settings and will build health-care administrators who will provide leadership for their organizations and communities based on a strong commitment to public health, ethics, honesty, and service as well as demonstrate the ability to introduce creative ways to meet health-care needs of a diverse society.

    Health Administration Executive Track (MHA)

    The Master of Health Administration Executive Track is geared to mid-career health care professionals with at least five years of growing obligations within health services or related industries that need specific knowledge of management to develop their careers. This 12-course,48-hour Master’s degree takes 24 months to complete and is taught in Houston one weekend a month.

    Public Health (DrPH)

    The Doctor of Public Health is an advanced degree for those whose career goals are in the field of public health professional practice including current and potential leaders in the practice of public health. Applicants can choose between two programs: health promotion and community health sciences or epidemiology and health care.

    Health Services Research (Ph.D.)

    The Philosophy Doctor of Health Services Research is designed to prepare students to perform high-quality research that solves important health services issues through intensive research methods education. Students are given opportunities for advanced training in health policy, organizational theory, and economics, together with practical expertise in specific areas of health policy or management.

    Health Coaching for Chronic Disease Prevention and Management (CERT)

    Health coaches are a crucial new aspect of our growing health care system. We work independently or with primary care providers and employers to help achieve health-care goals for consumers, patients, and staff. Becoming a health coach allows for students in the field of public health.

    Global Health (CERT)

    The Global Health Graduate Certificate is an interdisciplinary certification that is available for all Texas A&M University graduate students. Its purpose is to teach public health professionals about global public health perspectives, to encourage students to consider careers in a variety of settings and to promote research and innovation in tackling the myriad of public health problems that exist around the world.

      The Texas A&M Sports Club Association offers the ability to compete against clubs from other collegiate institutions in 37 different sports at the state, regional or national levels. Many clubs often give members the chance to learn or improve their skills in a social environment. Each club is run by students, has times and facilities for practice, and receives some monetary support. Clubs may charge dues and participate in fundraising activities to help subsidize the costs of travel and equipment. While the staff of the Sports Club and the Recreational Sports Department assist clubs in raising the finances, facilities, and equipment required, the focus is on the leadership and growth of the students. Students are directly responsible for all facets of an effective and efficient organization’s operation and management. Sports Clubs, therefore, give students a rare opportunity to develop both physical and leadership skills.

      Transportation and Parking

      Transportation Services is an accredited team of professionals dedicated to providing the community with reliable, diverse, and creative fleet, parking and transit services. The team supports Texas A&M University’s teaching, science, and public service mission, with an emphasis on customer service and communication.

      There are 37,330 parking spaces spread over 151 parking lots and 5 parking garages as of the beginning of FY2016. There are 55 parking lots and 5 garages. Some places are over a lot (Lot 100 has 11 lots). There are 21,928 student purchasing rooms. There is space for disabled parking. That officer in his/her section of the campus grid is responsible for the 30-minute parking area. Once parking areas are initially inspected, the officer enters a handheld device the information regarding the vehicles parked in the area. The officer returns to the parking area after about 30-40 minutes and re-enters information on the vehicles in the parking area into the handheld that indicates which are in breach of the time limit of the field. The order in which the officer in his or her section of the campus grid visits the parking areas is left to the discretion of the officer.


    Guidance For Best Performance in Medical School

      Work Smart

      Studying medicine comes with a certain expectation to work harder on average than most other fields students. There are generally more contact hours than other subjects with practicals and lectures taking up a great deal of time. Of course, it’s not just the contact hours when you are working, lecture notes need to be read over, essays have to be written, practicals should be prepared for and keeping on top of it all can be a challenge. This is particularly the case since your workload can vary from week to week, sometimes scheduling a lot of work and sometimes spending a whole week with very little to do. Therefore, it is important to be flexible with how you work and understand that you will sometimes have to put in a long work period to have time off when you need it. So it takes hard work and diligent work to do it.

      Always Make Good Notes

      Pay attention and take good, organized notes during the lecture. Each new lecture starts with a new tab. Grab keywords and concepts mentioned by the lecturer (you’re not going to have time to copy full sentences). So, after class is over, go through your notes and address as soon as possible all the questions that occur in your mind.

      That may sound like a rather trivial point, but it should not be overlooked. For many courses, the truth is that you’re only really studying to pass your exams and once you’ve managed this, the information you’ve tried so hard to learn is useless. For medicine, this is very much not the case, with fields of study including anatomy, biology, biochemistry, pharmacology, and pathology all being directly applicable in the diagnosis, understanding, and treatment of a disease. For a minor wrong diagnosis or inadequate understanding of concepts at doctors, the end could be deadly. There are times when you are unable to understand certain concepts, you simply give up.
