Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine Introduction:

Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine was established in 2007 and since then, it has been successfully attracting students and training them to become health care physicians who will be determined to help the community and the medical profession. TouroCOM is also working to eliminate the diversity disparities in the healthcare system so that these physicians can meet all the healthcare needs of the people. About 80% of the TouroCOM hospital affiliates target those communities that are underserved in both urban and rural areas. Moreover, students of TouroCOM are active advocates and coordinators from Harlem and the Hudson Valley to Haiti and beyond.

The medical curriculum of the Touro Medical School is one of its kind and it takes full advantage of today’s advanced medical and classroom technologies. The faculty of TouroCOM consists of people who are accomplished researchers and practitioners in the osteopathic medical field. In addition to this, with the help of access given to newly constructed labs and facilities, faculty members are motivated to pursue or continue their projects which will improve the health care of patients everywhere.

Pre-Clinical Education:

In the D.O. Program, students spend their first 2 years in becoming deeply engaged in the basic sciences. The students of the D.O. program will learn that all factors; psychological, biological, and environmental must be focused on while diagnosing and treating patients. The Touro Medical School uses the advanced educational technology available to educate students and give them opportunities to start problem-solving and think like a physician. The faculty of Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine will track student’s progress and can also step in to help them when required.

Clinical Rotations

During the last two years of the D.O. program, students will be allowed to train at one of the hospital affiliates of TouroCOM throughout the New York Metro area to start putting their skills to practice in areas such as family medicine, emergency medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, surgery, pediatrics, radiology, and psychiatry. The TouroCOM also offers a broad range of electives that include international study for the students so that they can further explore their specific areas of interest.

All those candidates applying to the Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine must pass all these courses in their undergraduate or post-baccalaureate study with a minimum of grade ‘C’ or better in each of them:

Biology (8 hours, including 2 hours of lab work).
Inorganic Chemistry (8 hours, including 2 hours of lab work).
Organic Chemistry (8 hours, including 2 hours of lab work).
Physics (8 hours, including 2 hours of lab work).
English (6 hours).
Mathematics/Computer Science (3 hours).
Behavioral Sciences (6 hours).

Application Process:

The TouroCOM accepts applications through the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM). The applicants can visit aacom.org and use the Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine College Designation Form number: 010142-00 to apply to TouroCOM.

The Interview Process:

Once the college will receive the supplemental application, the admission office will invite the qualified candidates for an interview. The qualified students will be invited to the campus for a formal interview and informational presentations. Interviews and campus visits will be conducted on a rolling basis from October till May.

S. Program:

The TouroCOM offers the Master of Science Program in Interdisciplinary Studies in Physical and Biological Sciences in both, the Middletown and Harlem campuses. This degree program can help better prepare students to take on the diligence of medical education at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine, or elsewhere.

It is a one-year degree program and during this, students will attend the class taught by the Medical College Faculty of the TouroCOM at any of the campuses alongside DO students. The curriculum of the M.S program includes 42 credits in the ethics, biosciences, and health and human behavior as well as 1 credit in community service. In addition to this, those students who complete the M.S. Program with at least a 3.45 GPA and successfully pass their comprehensive exam may qualify for the D.O. Program of TouroCOM.

Academic Requirements:

TouroCOM requires the following academic requirements. All students must complete all these to apply to TouroCOM:

A complete bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university.
MCAT scores (GRE, PCAT, and DAT scores are acceptable interesting in the M.S. Degree without consideration for direct matriculation into the DO program).
The science and overall GPA must be at least 3.00 (out of 4.00).

The Interview Process:

Generally, on-campus interviews are scheduled so that the candidates can be interviewed in-person but TouroCOM also gives a phone or skype interview option to those students who are unable to visit the campus. The campus visit includes a tour of the medical facilities provided at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine as these tours give a chance to students to learn more about the campus as well as the surrounding. Moreover, faculty members usually conduct these in-person interviews and submit their recommendations to the Admissions Director to further proceed. However, an interview doesn’t guarantee acceptance.

Horizon Student Housing:

TouroCOM provides housing facilities to its students. The Horizon Student Housing facility has been designed with keeping students in mind. It is located in the same building as the Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine and they make sure that students can enjoy a centralized learning and living environment that benefits their ultimate objective of succeeding as a healthcare professional.

Horizon Student Housing offers every necessity and comfort one can desire. It provides beautifully furnished rooms along with private bathrooms to ensure a better stay for the students. It also provides students with a facility to watch TV on large flat screens in the lounges and common room. Every room in the housing community has its flat-panel TV and there’s a central grab-and-go and drink bar that is open until 10:00 PM. In addition to this, vending machines are also available that are accessible 24/7, and the housing community hosts engaging and entertaining activities monthly to enhance the quality of student life.

TouroCOM Counselling & Wellness:

Medical school is very exciting but sometimes it becomes hectic and stressful because of its hardships. Counseling & Wellness facility at TouroCOM provides the necessary support that students need to help them excel in the future. These services include referrals to off-campus resources, confidential short-term counseling, and many ways to encourage wellness along with the student’s medical training.

The health counselors of Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine are professionally licensed clinicians who provide an environment that prioritizes a student’s emotional growth and well-being. The TouroCOM believes that counseling is a chance to get to know what is on a student’s mind with an objective person and provide them an opportunity to establish skills to better manage the demands of medical training. The students may also take a 2-minute drive from the campus to Route 211 where there are various number of restaurants are located like Buffalo Wild Wings, Texas Roadhouse, Panera Bread, Five Guys, Starbucks, etc. In addition to this, there are various family-owned and ethnic chain restaurants to explore from Asian to Greek, Indian to the Caribbean, and everything in between.

Support Services:

The TouroCOM Family Health Center provides student health services. However, there are many people on campus that students can turn to for counseling and guidance. The Dean of Student Affairs, Registrar, Directors of Financial Aid, Bursar, professors, and department chairpersons all consider it among their work responsibilities to help students in need.

The Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine also connect every student with a faculty advisor and mentor, a professor with whom students should feel comfortable discussing academic as well as professional and personal matter. How to get successful in a Medical School?

Resistance is an evil thing that encourages us to procrastinate and stops us from doing our work. Different studies show that our brain is not good at multi-tasking because it is designed to work on tasks serially, not in parallel. Moreover, there are so many distractions these days that we’ve trained our brain to not be able to focus properly. But one needs to overcome these distractions to get successful in a medical school because medical school demands hard work consisting of sleepless nights and a lot of hardships.

If getting into a medical school was easy, everyone would have been in a medical school today. Yes, getting into a medical school is difficult but surviving in a medical school requires a lot of hard work. So how you focus on your education when there are so many other equally important tasks that demand your attention? Here are a few tips that’ll help you succeed in a medical school if you’ll follow them.

Pick a few topics the night before:

At the end of every day, ask yourself a question before going to sleep, “If I could only get a few topics done tomorrow, what would it be?” Now, make sure that you focus on those particular topics that you have in your mind in the morning and complete that task. Make sure to complete that ask and take help from someone if you don’t understand anything. In this way, you won’t leave everything on the last day. However, you’ll have a hard time to keep up with your school if you keep your focus on only a few topics every day, but the idea behind this is to:

Just get started on something.
Build a momentum so that you do something every day instead of doing nothing.

Make a Weekly Plan:

If you develop this habit, it will not only help you get organized but also calm your anxious brain. This step is very important and should be kept in mind from day one. Be very careful and very picky about people. No, it doesn’t mean that don’t talk to anyone but choose your friends wisely. Help every person who asks for help from you and avoid getting into any conflict with anyone. If you end up getting into one, try to resolve that as soon as possible, so that you don’t get distracted from your studies because of that.

Carefully observe the people around you and make friends very carefully because friends can help you spend the rest of your time in college nicely or they can ruin it. Making more allies than enemies is a good option, help people a lot because they’ll help you out too when you’ll need it. Try to be a little sharp-minded and keep yourself from getting exploited. Help out others because this way, you can make more allies than enemies and they could end up helping you in your time of need.
