UCSD School of Medicine requirnments:

The UC San Diego School of Medicine will consider applications from U.S. citizens, permanent residents of the U.S., DACA recipients, and international applicants.

Coursework Recommendation for UCSD School of Medicine:

It is recommended that students enter medical school after four years of undergraduate study; the absolute minimum requirement is attendance for three academic years at an accredited college of arts and sciences, with at least one full year at an accredited 4-year institution in the United States. Students who have attended a foreign school must have completed at least one year of study at a four-year college in the United States (undergraduate or graduate level) before applying.

UCSD medicine school of does not have requirements regarding coursework that must be completed. The following courses are recommended to make our evaluation of your application easier, and to better prepare you for the MCAT and medical school:

• One academic year (2 semesters or 3 quarters) of college-level Biology
• One academic year (2 semesters or 3 quarters) of college-level General Chemistry
• One term (1 semester or 1 quarter) of college-level Biochemistry
• One academic year (2 semesters or 3 quarters) of college-level Organic Chemistry.
• One academic year (2 semesters or 3 quarters) of college-level Physics.
• One academic year (2 semesters or 3 quarters) of college-level Calculus or Statistics
• Laboratory coursework for all courses that offer corresponding labs.

Applicants that are missing any of these courses will still be considered.

Many students earn AP credit and are allowed to “pass out” of introductory courses in subjects such as Biology and Chemistry at their undergraduate school. In these cases, we recommend that applicants take upper-division courses in these subjects. Applicants that pass out of the intro-level courses will not be penalized in our review of the application.

Applicants that take on-line coursework from an accredited school will not be at a disadvantage when compared to applicants that take “in-person” coursework.

Entrance Exam:

Once the candidate is eligible for applying in any of the degree programs mentioned above, they have to further clear an exam called MCAT.

You must have taken the MCAT within the 3 calendar years before your planned matriculation date. Applicants for the entering class of 2020 (submitting AMCAS applications in 2019) must have taken an MCAT exam in the years 2017 – 2019. MCAT scores for exams taken in early 2020 will not be considered.

Selection Criteria:

• The Admissions Committee selects applicants for matriculation who have demonstrated the personal qualities of intelligence, maturity, integrity, dedication to the ideal of service to society and who are best suited for meeting the educational goals of the school, whether in a field of primary care specialization or other disciplines of medicine. The school desires students with diverse interests and backgrounds and is committed to expanding opportunities in medical education for individuals from socioeconomic and educationally disadvantaged backgrounds.
• The Admissions Committee has no preference for an undergraduate major field of study but does prefer students with evidence of broad training and in-depth achievement in a particular area of knowledge, whether in the humanities, social sciences, or natural sciences.
• Candidates for admission are evaluated based on their undergraduate academic record, performance on the MCAT, nature, and depth of scholarly and extracurricular activities undertaken, letters of recommendation from premedical committee or professors, personal interviews with members of the Admissions Committee, and other standards of comparison that may be established by the faculty. Personal interviews with members of the Admissions Committee are required of all qualified applicants. The interview evaluates the applicant’s abilities and skills necessary to satisfy the nonacademic or technical standards established by the faculty and the personal and emotional characteristics that are necessary to become an effective physician.

UCSD School of Medicine Tuition Fee:

• The application fee at University of California–San Diego is $105.
• Its tuition is full-time: $33,855 (in-state) and full-time: $46,100 (out-of-state).

Facilities:

Multi-Disciplinary Labs (MDL) Located on the first floor of the Biomedical Sciences Building, the MDLs consist of six identical classrooms (MDL – 1 through MDL – 6). Each lab can accommodate approximately 25 students for class sessions and has locker storage for microscopes and teaching slide collections. In addition to lab sessions, the MDLs are frequently scheduled for small group breakout and problem-based learning sessions. The MDLs have built-in audiovisual equipment including LCD projectors that can display DVD, VCR or PowerPoint presentations.

HALASZ ANATOMY LAB

Halasz Anatomy LabThe Halasz Anatomy labs are located directly below the MDLs in the basement of the Basic Science Building. This space is used for teaching Anatomy, Organ Physiology, and Basic Neurology. The Halasz laboratories are also used for Continuing Medical Education lab-based events at UCSD.

SSPPS LABS

There are 3 new labs (B230, B232, and B234) in the basement of the Biomedical Sciences Building. Located in a corridor parallel to the Halasz Labs, these labs have room partitions so that the lab can be one, two or three separate spaces. Equipped with surgical lighting these labs are used to teach Anatomy and Histology to Pharmacy students as well as used to hold training sessions for residents and physicians.

Managing Time:

Managing time is a milestone that gets every medical student through the 5 years of hard work and sleepless nights. Managing time is a competent task and requires work but once you get a hold of how to manage time and allot your time to each task effectively, you’re already good to go. There are certain aspects of managing time. 

Firstly, manage your time according to the importance of the task. We all know that throughout our life, all things are done concerning the relative significance it holds for us. Thus, keep in perspective that the most important task comes first, and then comes the rest.  Secondly, manage time according to the difficulty of a particular task. This means the difficult task should be done first, due to the technicalities it carries and the consumption of time it requires. Thus, keep in perspective the difficulty of all tasks and allot your time accordingly. 

Thirdly, monitor your time management progress. This part may come off as difficult because of the process that may be involved. So indulge in performance tracking that will enlighten you on how you have managed your time, how effectively, how much more growth is needed and how the steps that are needed are being followed. Thus, this step is extremely crucial for the underlying frameworks of time management and the importance that it holds.

Self-Study:

If getting through a medical school was so easy, everyone would be doing it. But that’s the difference, it’s not. Relying solely on old methods, or one method of study is never ample. The sooner the students realize it, the better and easier it will be for them to adapt. Thus, you should keep in mind the significance of studying since day one.

Studying through various means encompassing class lectures, notes, studying online and the list goes on and on. The technicalities related to the field of medical and the crucial field that it requires a massive amount of hard work and a strong potential that needs to be observed immediately in the students.
