The School of Medicine Education Building was completed in 2012 and contains a 100-seat lecture hall, 10 patient evaluation rooms, problem-based learning classrooms, a medical simulation lab, and administrative office space. The building was certified LEED-Silver in from the U.S. In January 2014 the Green Building Council.

    History

    The UCR / UCLA Program in Biomedical Sciences was established in 1974 with the dual objective of attracting outstanding students at UC Riverside and increasing the number of medical students entering clinical training at UCLA Students in the program who completed their undergraduate studies and then moved to UCLA for their third and fourth year of medical education at UC Riverside, earned a M.D. From David Geffen Medical School. Approximately 850 students went through the program between its inception and the opening of the UCR School of Medicine in 2013 which was renamed the UCR / UCLA Thomas Haider Program in Biomedical Sciences in 1997. The success of the Haider Program served as the basis for the UCR School of Medicine’s growth. In 2003, then-Chancellor France A. Córdova called together a team of blue-ribbons to begin the process of creating a four-year medical school. The UC Regents accepted UCR’s plan for a school of medicine in July 2008 and Dr. G. Richard Olds, the new dean, and vice-chancellor of health affairs came on board by February 2010. California’s budget woes delayed the preliminary accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), but in October 2012, the School of Medicine received that long-awaited accreditation and Inaugural Class Recruitment 2013. In August 2013 the class of 50 students arrived, starting their journey towards becoming a physician. The school graduated its first class of medical students in June 2017 and secured full LCME accreditation.

    The UCR School of Medicine’s mission is to improve the health of the people of California and, in particular, to serve Inland Southern California by training a diverse workforce of physicians and by developing innovative research and health care delivery programs that will improve the health of the region’s medically underserved and become models to be emulated throughout the state and the Nation.

    The UCR School of Medicine is looking for students with diverse experiences in intellect and life. UCR supports wide academic backgrounds including humanities, foreign language, social sciences and the arts to help prepare potential physicians to connect with increasingly diverse patient populations, health care professionals and colleagues. The UCR School of Medicine seeks students with diverse intellect and life experiences. Applications can be submitted beginning June 1, 2019, for admission to the UCR School of Medicine for class enrollment in August 2020. Applicants can apply through the Application System of the American Medical College. Until applying, the registrar of each school you have attended may request that a complete set of official transcripts be forwarded directly to AMCAS. Official transcripts are not required for the work that you have completed in the previous term (e.g., if the application is submitted in the summer, prior official transcripts from the spring are not required). No review of your application will take place before AMCAS receives both the application as well as all appropriate official transcripts. The deadline to apply is November 1, 2019.

      How are Applications Reviewed

      The UCR School of Medicine admissions committee uses a comprehensive examination of candidates to recognize students with varied intellectual and life experiences, where each applicant’s non-academic qualifications are evaluated as carefully as their academic record. The Committee is carefully reviewing the complete profile of each candidate to select candidates who are academically qualified and have the range of volunteer/community and personal experiences that will help them become well-prepared physicians to care for the diverse population of our communities. The Committee also considers that each applicant’s “distance traveled” to arrive at this stage of his or her career, recognizing that not all applicants have equal access to resources, mentorship and strong preparation for high school before college.

      Key Attributes

      Several candidates will be invited to visit and take part in a series of interviews at the UCR School of Medicine. Selection is based on:

    • The applicants ‘ academic competitiveness, specifically their performance in advanced-level courses in both science and non-science disciplines.
    • The quality of their recommendation letters, specifically concerning character traits such as leadership, honesty, hard work dedication and communication skills (see personal core attributes listed below).
    • The awards and honors earned from the applicants.
    • The nature and length of their extracurricular activities in areas such as research, teaching, work experience, and special talent.
    • The demonstrated commitment to community service, particularly to underserved populations.
    • The extent and quality of their clinical experiences, demonstrating their motivation and commitment to a medical career.

    Research

    Following the University of California’s science-based philosophy, medical students at the UCR School of Medicine have many opportunities to engage in cutting-edge studies during their four-year medical education. It includes involvement in Practice Improvement Projects (PIPs) through the Longitudinal Ambulatory Care Experience (LACE), summer research fellowships that accompany MS1, ongoing clinical studies during MS3, and study rotations during MS4. While the School of Medicine’s mission is primarily tied to enhancing accessibility and care quality, it is also consistent with the University of California’s research mission. The faculty members conduct world-class research in a wide range of fields which provide exciting opportunities for medical students throughout their educational experience.

      Research Schedule

      Under the Longitudinal Ambulatory Care Program, students are expected to engage in Practice Improvement Projects (PIP) during years 1 through 3. Students may suggest and evaluate new methods to enhance clinical practice and treatment in an actual clinical ambulatory care environment within this essential portion of the undergraduate medical curriculum. Students are also expected to compile these research studies for publication in the third year. Medical students will apply for a ten-week summer research fellowship in the summer between the first and second years, which also comes with a small stipend for the fellow. For summer medical research fellowships, Faculty research projects are identified in the spring of the first year. Most of the participating faculty is in the Biomedical Sciences Department, but many others also do health-related research from departments across the UCR campus in political science, economics, psychology, bioengineering, and anthropology. The Medical Sciences Department also has active researchers doing clinical research and population health research. Students will be given opportunities to participate in current clinical research initiatives as part of the clerkship experience. Research Rotations Students have the opportunity to receive academic credit for up to two independent, four-week elective research during the fourth year. The research project is approved in advance by the senior associate dean for education, and the criteria for the satisfactory completion of this elective include prior agreement with an SOM faculty mentor who will also provide a written assessment at the conclusion of the elective, and a written student report which may be in the form of a brief scientific report, a draft manuscript, or a poster.

      The UCR School of Medicine’s Office of Financial Aid is here to help you cover the costs of your medical education and to help teach you how to manage your finances and college obligations, allowing you to concentrate on your academic pursuits. The programs include loan counseling, guidance on retaining eligibility for financial assistance, seminars and tools to handle the loan portfolio. Throughout the school year, financial wellness workshops cover a variety of topics that help you learn how to manage your income, both in college and beyond. FIRST aims to help academic medicine community members manage the challenges of student debt. FIRST allows students from medical schools to expand their financial literacy, make smart decisions about student loans and effectively handle their student debt. Organize and monitor your loans, then use the Medloans ® Organizer and Calculator to view sample repayment scenarios, the only Web tool of its kind created for medical students. This monthly budget worksheet lets you track how much you spend a week on each item you buy. Determine if each purchase was a need or a desire after listing each item, add up the expenses and answer the questions.

      University of California Riverside School of Medicine Scholarships

      Dean’s Mission Scholarship – Merit Program

      Strong, mission-fit applicants will be offered the most prestigious scholarship to fund either 100% of all compulsory tuition and fees, around $40,000, or a $20,000 award that covers 50% of all compulsory tuition and fees for the first and second years of medical school.

      Dean’s Mission Award – Service Program

      Students beginning their third year of medical school will be chosen each year to receive a two-year scholarship to cover all eligible university fees, not covered by other forms of financial assistance based on need. Each receiver selected must complete the following:

       Two years, six months (30 months) of professional service in one of the following areas-pediatrics, family medicine, general internal medicine, Ob / Gyn, general surgery or psychiatry-within San Bernardino, Riverside, or Imperial County. Failure to meet these criteria would automatically result in the Dean’s Mission Award being transformed into a loan that must be repaid upon graduation.

      Founders Scholarship Award

      The Founder’s Scholarship Award Program was set up to recruit the best students in the applicant pool already accepted to the School of Medicine. The scholarship provides an additional opportunity for highly recruited students to attend medical school at UCR.

      Thoroughly revise the Course Outline

      Taking notes from a lecture is an activity the requires focus. Active listening includes focusing, building up an enthusiasm for listening to the lecture, and maintaining a strategic distance from the judgment of the speaker before completion. Put all your attention to the beginnings and endings of the lecture to grasp all the knowledge being delivered well. The ideas you hear need to be evaluated for the selection of important information. Avoid the passive listener approach of trying to get it all instead, listen for main ideas, key details, and transitional phrases that point to the structure and focus of the lecture.
