The University of Minnesota school of medicine, established in 1888, educates students and graduate doctors, offers patient care, and conducts biomedical and clinical research. UMN offers programs for graduate and undergraduate degrees as well as ongoing professional development. The medical school of UMN is one of the largest in the country, with two campuses located in Duluth and twin cities Minnesota, Duluth. The Twin Cities campus is an interdisciplinary research center. UMN campus in Duluth educates 130 first year and second-year medical students in rural or American Indian communities.


    The University of Minnesota Medical School) has an eight-year accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). The school is in the re-accreditation process with the Steering Committee, nine LCME Subcommittees, and an Independent Student Analysis Subcommittee. The school has accreditation for graduate programs by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Admission Procedure


    Candidates who are graduates of an accredited Medical Institution of the U.S. or Canada are eligible to apply for UMN. The candidate should fulfill the course requirement which is mentioned below:

  • Quantitative Reasoning: One course in calculus or statistics (biostatistics preferred).
  • Biology: Two courses with a grade of B or higher, covering cell biology and genetics (lab experience is highly recommended.
  • Chemistry: Two courses in general (inorganic) chemistry, one course in organic chemistry, and one course in biochemistry
  • Physics: Two-course sequence covering mechanics, heat, electricity, optics, and radiation physics.
  • Eligibility Criteria for University of Minnesota school of medicine

  • All candidates applying should have completed at least 90 semester hours of course work in an accredited Canadian or U.S. college.
  • Applicants who are not U.S. nationals or permanent residents in the U.S. can apply as well, provided that they have completed a minimum of 90 semester hours of course work in an accredited Canadian or U.S college.
  • Applicants who present MCAT test scores, those test scores can be from the current version of MCAT or the future version of MCAT, however, the test should be taken no later than 30th September of the year before matriculation.
  • The average GPA and MCAT for the entering class of 2019 was:
  • 78 Cumulative GPA with a range of 3.24-4.00
  • 75 Science GPA with a range of 3.11-4.00
  • 518 MCAT, with a range of 504-526. Mode: 519

  • First of all, if you fulfill the requirements mentioned above you have to complete and submit your AMCAS application. For the AMCAS application, the applicant has to recommendation letters. Three letters minimum, the letters can be from a faculty member, research experience, clinical experience or a job.
  • After the AMCAS application has been processed the candidate will be asked to submit a secondary application before the due date assigned.
  • After mailing the secondary application the candidates selected will receive an email for interviews. The interviews are held in September through February. 
  • After the interviews, the decisions are transmitted through UMN secure online application system and via email.

    UMN libraries offer these services

    The books are issued to Interns, Postgraduate Students, Research Scholars, and Faculty Members. Bound/unbound journals, audio-visual materials, and CD-ROMs are for in-house use only. The Library staff assists users to locate the needed information from the available information resources. Based on the collection, users are provided service by the library. Through the photocopy services library provides photocopies of articles from journals and books to the users as and when requested further users can also send and receive Fax messages from the library. Tips for Success In Medical College

    Always Work Smart:

    It is often observed at medical colleges by teachers and experts, students are seen complaining that despite all their efforts their grades are not improving. If you look into the depth it is a very alarming situation. Students should get their desired benefits from the efforts they invested. But studies state that students are unable to do so because they are studying hard but not smart. You should study smartly, adopt strategies which help you in achieving a greater number of tasks in the least time. Working smart includes relaxing and taking breaks. The tough studies and hectic schedule at medical college can drain your energy and make you tired. It is essential for you to relax and take some time for yourself. You can always perform some mind relaxing activity or play games or go to the gym for rehabilitation. At medical college at times even after hard work you are not able to achieve high grades, you should not get discouraged and continue with the hard work. You should reward yourself for the achievements you make.

    More Self-Effort and Less Formal Education:

    Once you’re finished with your school education, then intermediate studies, don’t expect things from there to run smoothly. Because you have to enter professional life after college, college is your trial where you learn how to deal with people around you and do most of your work on your own. Hence in college, it will be your and only your job to make sure you’re on top of your work. Your friends, teachers, or anyone else will not take the responsibility of making sure you understand everything and complete whatever work is required. Teachers are going to give lectures and that is basically all the formal education you are going to get, there is no spoon-feeding so you have to add a lot of self-effort to that.
