University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences

The University of North Dakota, School of Medicine campus

UND School of Medicine Brief History

The University of North Dakota, School of Medicine was founded in 1905, first offering a two-year program leading into the expansion of a B.S Degree Program of four-years in 1973. In 1966, the University of North Dakota, School of Medicine saw its first M.D. graduates being granted degrees in 1976.

In 1996, the School had developed much in terms of diversity in educational and research activities, which had grown to include not only physicians-in-training, but professional programs in physical therapy, occupational therapy, medical laboratory science, physician assistant studies, athletic training/sports medicine, public health, and master and doctoral degrees in the Biomedical Sciences and Clinical-Translational Sciences. To reflect this diversity, the name changed to the UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences (SMHS).

In 2016, the latest version of the School of Medicine & Health Sciences building was designed to cater to the growing innovative need for collaborative learning and inter-professional education. The building features a live Animal Vivarium, Gross Anatomy laboratory, eight learning communities (where students from all disciplines intermingle and learn each other’s role in the health system), and the state’s largest Simulation Center.

Each academic year, over $20 million worth of research – most of it federally funded by agencies such as the CDC and NIH – is being conducted by faculty and graduate student researchers. SMHS research specializations include neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, infectious disease, the environmental and genetic bases of diseases like cancer, immune and inflammatory disease, and health disparities between different populations.

The public SMHS building, financed by the citizens of North Dakota themselves serves also as a free art gallery, displaying hundreds of works by world-renowned artists whose pieces have ended up in UND’s collection over the years. Visitors are offered a chance to view these pieces when in the vicinity.

I'm grappling with my online studies in Infectious Disease at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. It's made me realize what a visual learner I still am. So these vids are making what was murky crystal clear. While I am easily distracted when I have to do hours of straight reading, I am glued to the videos. I've looked for a series of such videos for months. A million thanks - Dr Najeeb has a true passion for teaching and can convey highly complex topics in an understandable and fun way.
