Wayne State University Medical School History

The story of Wayne State University started in 1868 when five physicians who experienced brutal medical treatment on the battlefields of the Civil War dedicated themselves to improving health education and care in Detroit. They founded the Detroit Medical College, which has since become Warrior Strong School of Medicine an internationally renowned school that has led to groundbreaking medical milestones such as the first successful open-heart surgery in the world and the discovery of AZT for AIDS care. The School of Medicine continues to be fuelled by community passion and dedication to urban clinical excellence and is now part of a leading research institution made up of 13 schools and colleges. By social awareness and an increasing emphasis on creativity in curriculum, science and clinical care, the School of Medicine continues to educate a diverse group of physicians and biomedical scientists who strive to turn into practice the promise of equal health care for all.

The Wayne State University School of Medicine sets policies to help ensure that its goal is to educate a diverse group of doctors and biomedical scientists who will turn the dream of equal health into a reality for everyone. WSU faculty, staff, and students are responsible for adhering to university policies at all times.

Wayne State University Admission

A holistic selection process is used by the Wayne State University School of Medicine to determine applicants. In addition to meeting all admission requirements, the entire record will be considered, including grade-point average, Medical College Admission Test scores, recommendations, and secondary application. The Admission Committee makes use of this method to determine your temperament, intelligence, character, and suitability for a medical career.

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for admission to the Wayne State University School of Medicine, you must have earned a bachelor’s degree including all pre-requisites for the Medical School and you must be:

A U.S. citizen
A U.S. permanent resident
A Canadian citizen
– OR –
Any student who has completed a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree at Wayne State University regardless of citizenship.

Admission requires specific coursework. In unusual cases and at the Admission Committee’s discretion, you may be given a waiver for certain conditions of the course, provided you have an outstanding academic record. Waivers must be sought in writing when applying.

Whatever your field of study, your premedical coursework should include:

Two semesters of biology/zoology with lab for each
Two semesters of college English
Two semesters of general/inorganic chemistry with lab for each
Two semesters of organic chemistry with lab for each
Two semesters of physics with lab for each

The Admission Committee strongly recommends and takes the following courses into consideration

Biochemistry
Statistics
Medical ethics
Mathematics
Social science
Upper-level biology

Additional Requirements

MCAT

University recommends taking the spring admission test at the Medical College before you apply. Your scores will be considered from exams taken over the past three years. That review is performed separately. There will be no variation of the scores from various tests. You need to take the MCAT no later than September of the year you intend to apply in.

Recommendation Letter

With your secondary submission, you are asked to submit letters of recommendation. A secondary application must include a statement from your college or university’s pre-medical advisory committee, or three letters of recommendation— with at least two from faculty members. In the past 12 months, one letter must have been written. We strongly encourage you to send at least one letter from your school if you are in a post-baccalaureate or graduate program. When you apply for M.D. / Ph.D. Programme, there must be at least one letter from a researcher. Letters of recommendation can be sent at any time via the American Application Service for Medical College. If your letters are distributed by your advising office at the undergraduate level, they may use VirtualEvals. Once your letters have been posted AMCAS will import them and make them available to us.

Interviews

Attendance is expected at one of our Interview Days. Upon completion of the preliminary application, secondary application and review of letters of recommendation, selected applicants are invited to attend an Interview Day.

Transportation and Parking

Parking for students is available on the Lot 75 surface located in Canfield. If you have reserved parking, you can use your OneCard at the East gate to access the lot. Visitor parking can be found at the west surface gate Lot 75 for $4.25, payable upon entry. Bills and/or quarters of dollars can be used. Employee car parking is available on Canfield at Parking Structure 4. The gateway lies across from the Scott Hall building on Canfield. Once parking has been allocated around you, scan your OneCard through the reader and the parking gate will open. The gates are usually open from 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 a.m.

Campus Shuttle

You need a OneCard to use the shuttle to the medical campus. It is not for use by the public at large. Service operates continuously in intervals of around 30 minutes. The shuttle is called “Medical Campus Shuttle” and leaves Scott Hall an hour and a half-hour away.

Student Organizations

The Office of Student Organizations provides services to students ranging from accommodation for medical students to academic programs and extracurricular activities. Students at Wayne State School of Medicine develop the ability to engage in many interests. Cultural, educational and social interactions are developed by organizations and the overall relationships among our students are increased. The School of Medicine offers a diverse selection of services for students. Students may want to enter and take advantage of the opportunity, assistance, and comradery that comes from peers of similar interests. A wide array of resources and desires are represented, and students are encouraged to join an organization that is concerned with their medical needs.

Go Through Past Papers Thoroughly

That’s incredibly important! For every test, most professors aren’t free to create new questions. And there’s just so many questions that you can ask about the same subject.
